Jackie K. Cooper: 'Man on a Ledge' Is Pure Entertainment and Aren't We Ready For That

Man on a Ledge is a Die Hard-type of suspense film. The action is non-stop, the acting is good and there is no need to carp about the lack of absolute logic. In other words this is a movie to go to see to be entertained without stressing out over the little things. Sam Worthington leads a strong cast in a tale about a man wrongly convicted of a crime who fights to clear his name.

The film starts with Nick Cassidy (Worthington) going to a downtown hotel in New York and taking a room on the twenty-first floor. He orders a lobster dinner with champagne and then writes a suicide note. After cleaning his fingerprints from the room he climbs out on to the ledge and stands there. He is noticed almost immediately from the street and chaos ensues.

The police arrive in the person of Jack Dougherty (Edward Burns). He tries to talk Nick back into the room but Nick refuses and demands that Lydia Mercer (Elizabeth Banks) be brought in as the negotiator. If she is not put in charge he will jump. And it goes from there.

The pace of the movie never lessens. Nick is an escaped felon who claims he is innocent of the crime for which he was convicted. There are people who don't want to see him come in off the ledge. For them it would be best if he jumped, So there are a lot of conflicting forces in the film and you never know who the good guy is and who is the bad.

Worthington is solid as Nick while Banks steals the show as Mercer. Even amid the tension of the plot and the ensuing activities Worthington and Banks make a connection with their characters. Now that takes some good acting.

In supporting roles, Jamie Bell is believable as Nick's angry brother, Joey. Genesis Rodriguez provides some comic relief as Joey's girlfriend Angie. Titus Welliver is edgy as the tense Police Captain Dante, and Ed Harris is evil as a wealthy jeweler. Kyra Sedgwick makes a cameo appearance as a TV news reporter.

The movie is rated PG-13 for profanity & violence.

There are flaws in the script but they are not big ones. The main plot line plays out with logic. At the end of the movie I was tempted to sit through it again, and when was the last time you felt that way about a movie? It is just a movie to be savored with a bag of popcorn and a drink, and someone to enjoy the whole thing with you.

After the bombardment of "artistic" movies we have seen in the past month or so it is nice to have a movie that just simply entertains. That is exactly what Man on a Ledge does, and does it with success.

I scored Man on a Ledge a heightened 7 out of 10.

Siri Eating Up All of U.S. Bandwidth?

The iPhone 4S, with its much-hyped Siri feature, is awesome.

Siri will get you directions, let you make hands-free mobile calls, fetch answers to trivia questions, you name it. You can even goof on Siri for fun, asking if she'll marry you, pretending you're going to kill yourself, argue with your wife (below), etc.

And she plays along!

There is a downside to this genius innovation, however: Requiring far more data than other smartphones, Siri is bandwidth guzzler, the digital equivalent of a Hummer, and could prose problems for the entire U.S. cellular network.

A study by Arieso, an Atlanta firm that specializes in mobile networks, said the iPhone 4S “appears to unleash data consumption behaviors that have no precedent.”

Under most circumstances, this would be someone else’s problem - contracts are “tiered” so that those who use a network more than others pay more for that.

Except with data, it’s not that simple.

Cell networks are like any common resource; they have limits. Once they hit their limit, there’s no more to go around, meaning Siri could be everyone's problem.

As networks become congested, service deteriorates across the board. Private desire becomes a public issue as more calls are dropped and Internet access lags.

In short, expect interrupted service and higher bills to be standard in the next few years, unless cellular providers can innovate even faster than Apple.

Gingrich wants panel to look at in vitro clinics (AP)

LUTZ, Fla. ? Republican presidential contender Newt Gingrich called Sunday for a commission to study the ethical issues relating to in vitro fertilization clinics, where infertile women receive treatment to get pregnant and large numbers of embryos are created.

"If you have in vitro fertilization you are creating life. And therefore we should look seriously at what should the rules be for clinics that do that because they're creating life," said Gingrich, who opposes abortion and says life begins at conception.

Gingrich, who is campaigning for votes in Tuesday's Florida primary, did not expand on his proposal for a commission. His remarks seemed to open the possibility of a larger federal role over IVF clinics across the country than currently exists.

Standing outside the Exciting Idlewild Baptist Church, where he had attended Sunday worship services, Gingrich also said he opposes the use of leftover embryos for stem cell research, which advocates say offers the hope of treatments or even cures for a variety of diseases.

The issue of stem cell research has become politically charged over the past decade, as scientific technique has advanced.

Former President George W. Bush, who opposed abortion rights, signed an executive order in 2001 that said federal funds could be used for stem cell research only on lines that were already in existence, which scientists subsequently said had been compromised.

President Barack Obama, who supports abortion rights, jettisoned Bush's restrictions on federal funding for stem cell research after taking office.

In vitro fertilization involves creating an embryo outside a woman's body, then implanting it inside the womb. Excess embryos may be stored at the clinic, discarded, used for research or made available to other couples. A study nearly a decade ago estimated there were as many as 400,000 in existence.

St. Louis to host first major parade for Iraq War vets (Reuters)

ST. LOUIS (Reuters) ? At least 1,000 Iraq War veterans and their family members are expected to march in St. Louis on Saturday in the nation's first major homecoming parade honoring U.S. soldiers who served in the war, a coalition of veteran groups, private citizens and local officials said.

Since the last troops left Iraq in December there have been scattered small events, including a speech by President Barack Obama at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, thanking veterans for their service, but no major parade of the style seen at the end of World War One and World War Two.

Organizers said the downtown St. Louis parade was being run by a non-profit veteran group and several residents disturbed by the lack of a major pomp-and-circumstance homecoming for troops. They raised nearly $30,000 by Friday for the event.

"We thought that if we can have a victory parade for the Cardinals World Series victory, we certainly should be able to have one for the vets of Iraq," said St. Louis attorney Tom Appelbaum, who helped get the plans underway a month ago.

"It seems silly that there was a national debate about it," he added.

Veterans from the Iraq or Afghanistan wars may march with their families in the parade, expected to feature 83 floats, the hometown Budweiser Clydesdales, high school marching bands and units from police and fire departments, organizers said.

The U.S.-led invasion of Iraq in March 2003 quickly toppled Saddam Hussein, but the country descended into sectarian violence and an occupation that dragged on for nearly nine years before the last U.S. forces pulled out in December.

For Obama, the military pullout fulfilled an election promise to bring troops home from a conflict inherited from his predecessor that evolved into the most unpopular U.S. war since Vietnam.

About 4,500 U.S. troops were killed in Iraq, and the occupation was marred by the Abu Ghraib prison scandal and the killing of civilians by troops or private security contractors.

Thousands of Iraqi troops also died in the war as did thousands of Iraqi security forces in the chaotic years following the invasion, along with more than 100,000 civilians.

Parade organizers plan to begin the weekend with a ceremony starting at 9:11 p.m. on Friday at the Soldiers' Memorial near the Gateway Arch. There, the names of more than 6,000 American service men and women who died in the wars since the September 11, 2001, attacks will be read by volunteers through the night.

Supporters of the Iraq invasion cited in part a threat that Iraq possessed weapons of mass destruction, but none were recovered, leading to increasing criticism of the war, which some thought also sapped focus from the hunt for those responsible for the 2001 attacks on New York and Washington.

"The fact that we have had no support from the government shows how out of touch it is with how the majority of us vets feel," said former Specialist James Casey, 29, a parade organizer from St. Louis who was part of the 2003 invasion.

"This had to be done through the grass roots. We have had tremendous support here from all generations," he added.

The parade was organized through a Facebook page that has received 1,500 "likes" and the veteran's organization, the Mission Continues.

"We want to show that the skills of the post-9/11 vets can be transferred back into the civilian world," Casey said. "We are not broken and we can still lead from the front."

St. Louis Mayor Francis Slay helped smooth the details for the parade.

"These vets did all of this for all of us and they have a lot to offer us at home," Slay said. "They know how to get things done."

Video: New Quantum Dot Tech Could Boost Current Optical Fiber Band Tenfold
Current optical communications schemes rely on a narrow 1.55 micron wavelength band of about 10 terahertz, a band in which optical signals can be well controlled and loss of signal/data is fairly low. But to open up optical networks to the high data load of the future, we need to open up the span of available wavelength.

How the Glock Became America's Favorite Weapon [Guns]

I know next to nothing about guns but I know about the Glock. Chances are you do too. It's become a part of the American fabric, as closely associated to the US of A as AK-47s are to terrorists, muskets were to colonials and light sabers to Jedis. But how did that happen? How did an Austrian gun become America's favorite weapon? More »

Drug May Slow Early Prostate Cancer: Study (HealthDay)

TUESDAY, Jan. 24 (HealthDay News) -- New research suggests that Avodart, a drug used to treat an enlarged prostate gland, may help slow the progression of early stage prostate cancer, reducing the need for aggressive treatment in some men.

Prostate cancer can grow and spread slowly, which is why some men are urged to engage in so-called watchful waiting when the cancer is first diagnosed. Avodart (dutasteride) may help such men feel comfortable with surveillance as opposed to radical treatment, the researchers noted.

"The concept of active surveillance is gaining traction in most parts of the world," said study author Dr. Neil E. Fleshner, head of the division of urology at the Princess Margaret Hospital in Toronto. Still, some men are uncomfortable with doing nothing in the face of a cancer diagnosis, he said. "By using this drug, we can improve the proportion of men who remain committed to the surveillance."

The findings are published online Jan. 25 in The Lancet.

According to the U.S. National Cancer Institute, one out of every six men in the United States will develop prostate cancer in his lifetime. But because many of those cancers are low-grade, most will die of something else.

Avodart belongs to a class of drugs called 5-alpha reductase inhibitors. These drugs work by interfering with the effects of certain male hormones on the prostate. In the three-year study, prostate cancer progressed in 38 percent of 144 men with early prostate cancer who were treated with Avodart and 48 percent of the 145 men who received a placebo.

Men seem less anxious about the cancer diagnosis when they are doing something more proactive, Fleshner said. "The drug augments active surveillance and avoids most of the side effects associated with surgery and radiation," he said. Prostate removal surgery and/or radiation can lead to impotence and incontinence, he said.

The medication does have side effects, however, including reversible breast enlargement and tenderness and some sexual dysfunction.

"We know that we are over-treating prostate cancer," said Dr. Louis Potters, chairman of radiation medicine at North Shore University Hospital and Long Island Jewish Medical Center in Manhasset, N.Y.

"In the U.S., patients have a tendency to hear the word 'cancer,' and want to treat it right away," he said. "In these men with early prostate cancer, we can now say, 'Let's put you on this medication, and see what happens over the next couple of months.'"

However, some experts have concerns about 5-alpha reductase inhibitors. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration recently issued a warning that men who take these drugs to treat enlarged prostate glands may be at increased risk for high-grade prostate cancer.

Dr. Ryan Terlecki, an assistant professor of urology at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, N.C., said this may dampen enthusiasm for use of the drug to treat cancer.

"The overall role that these medications will play for urologists will decrease," Terlecki said. Doctors will likely begin looking toward noninvasive and/or non-medical treatments such as the use of thermal heat to cope with some of the symptoms of prostate conditions, he added.

NYC police chief apologizes for movie interview (omg!)

NEW YORK (AP) ? New York's police commissioner apologized Wednesday for appearing in a documentary movie about terrorism that Muslim groups have criticized as inflammatory, and said his department acted wrongly when it later showed the film to counterterrorism trainees.

A spokesman for Raymond Kelly had previously denied the commissioner had any participation in the making of the "The Third Jihad," suggesting last year that footage of Kelly was lifted from another source.

But on Wednesday Kelly said he had sat for an interview in 2007 because the filmmaker had "bona fides" in television and with the White House. The movie later was shown on a continuous loop on the sidelines during New York Police Department counterterrorism sessions.

"While it never became part of the Department's curriculum, and was not authorized for any training, regrettably it was shown in a room where officers who were filling out paperwork or on break from actual training had an opportunity to view it over an extended period in 2010," Kelly said in a written statement.

Police stopped playing the film after one of the trainees complained, he said.

"I offer my apologies to members of the Muslim community, in particular, who would find the film inflammatory and its airing on Department property, though unauthorized, to be inappropriate," Kelly wrote.

Some Muslim groups reacted angrily at the news. The admission "marks the blatant bigotry and lack of transparency that permeates the NYPD's approach to New York's Muslim communities," the Muslim Civil Liberties Coalition said Wednesday.

On Tuesday Mayor Michael Bloomberg said police had used "terrible judgment" in showing the movie at its training sessions.

"The Third Jihad," produced by the conservative Clarion Fund, accuses some moderate Muslims of being more radical than they appear on the surface and uses vivid footage of bombings and terror attacks to illustrate the danger of radical Islam. Speakers interviewed in the film warn viewers repeatedly that Western civilization is under attack.

Nearly 1,500 police officers went through the training and may have seen the film, according to police documents obtained by the Brennan Center for Justice, a think tank at New York University.

Muslim activists say they worry that the film teaches police officers to regard all Muslims as suspects. Last year an investigation by The Associated Press revealed the police department has operated a secret surveillance program targeting ethnic neighborhoods.

On Thursday activists planned to call for Kelly's resignation at an event outside New York's City Hall. Some of the activists were those singled out in the film.

The film's producer, Raphael Shore, issued a statement defending his work on Wednesday, saying, "Those that have blasted the film are attempting to stifle an important debate about the internal state of the Muslim community in America, and whether politicized Islam and indoctrination pose tangible security threats."

Kelly appears in "The Third Jihad" three times for a total of about 30 seconds, talking about prison converts, the Soviet Union and the threat of terrorists using nuclear weapons. Other people who appear in the documentary include former Mayor Rudolph Giuliani, who was in office when Muslim extremists attacked the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001, former CIA Director R. James Woolsey and former Department of Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge.

New York Police Department spokesman Paul Browne told reporters last year that he believed the footage of Kelly speaking was lifted from another source.

"The New York Police Department did not participate in its production," Kelly wrote in a March 7, 2011, letter to Majlis Ash-Shura of Metropolitan New York, a Muslim group.

Clarion Fund spokesman Alex Traiman said Kelly spoke on camera for 90 minutes and was fully aware of the movie's focus.

"The commissioner wasn't duped," Traiman said. "If he was unhappy with the line of questioning you'd think he would have broken off the interview before 90 minutes."

He accused Bloomberg and Kelly of bending to the will of Muslim activists.

"People don't want to deal with so much of that pressure; they prefer to cave in to it," he said.

The Clarion Fund, which is based in New York, has produced other movies about terrorism and Iran's nuclear program.

Shore used to work for Aish HaTorah, a network of Jewish education centers, but there is no other link between the two groups, Traiman said.

Gingrich rallied Freddie's troops (Politico)

New details from Newt Gingrich?s contracts worth $1.6 million with Freddie Mac show that the Republican hopeful wasn?t just a boardroom consultant, but served as a high-profile booster for the beleaguered organization. He even gave a rallying speech to dozens of the group?s political action committee donors in the spring of 2007.

Shortly after the ?rah, rah? speech, as one source described it, Gingrich gave an interview for the Freddie Mac website, where he supported the group?s model at length. The interview is no longer on Freddie?s site.

Gingrich said in the interview that Freddie has ?made an important contribution to home ownership and the housing finance system,? even though many Republicans revile it.

Gingrich has dribbled out the details of his relationship with Freddie Mac over the last few weeks, giving Mitt Romney repeated opportunities to accuse him of supporting the very entity many Republicans point to as the driving force behind the housing bubble. The issue is coming to the fore again, just as the GOP primary race enters Florida ? ground zero of the housing crisis.

Romney went after Gingrich Monday night on his firm?s $1.6 million worth of Freddie Mac contracts during the NBC debate in Tampa, Fla. saying: ?You could have spoken out in a way to say these guys are wrong, this needs to end. But instead, you were being paid by them. You were making over $1 million at the same time people in Florida were being hurt by millions of dollars.?

Gingrich offered a technical defense saying he was not an official lobbyist for the group.

?I have never, ever gone and done any lobbying,? Gingrich said. He described himself as ?a consultant.? Gingrich also made the point that he personally profited about $35,000 from the contracts.

Previously, Gingrich claimed he was a ?historian? for the failing mortgage giant, a line that his GOP rivals, like Romney and Jon Huntsman, attacked as absurd.

The disparity between Gingrich?s description of his work for Freddie, and the new examples suggests that attacks from his rivals aren?t about to go away, even as the campaign tries to do damage control. They released some details of one of the contracts before the debate on Monday.

Patriots favored by Vegas books to win Super Bowl

By OSKAR GARCIA

updated 10:49 p.m. ET Jan. 22, 2012

LAS VEGAS - Las Vegas casinos say the New England Patriots are favorites to win the Super Bowl thanks to their national following, a decade of winning and the playoff success of quarterback Tom Brady and coach Bill Belichick.

Race and Sports Director Mike Colbert says the Patriots opened as three-point favorites over New York in odds posted Sunday night after the Giants beat San Francisco 20-17 in overtime in the NFC championship game.

New England beat the Baltimore Ravens 23-20 for the AFC title.

Executive Race and Sports Director Jay Kornegay of the Las Vegas Hotel & Casino says an injury to Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski is a factor that could swing the line up to one point.

Colbert says the 2008 Super Bowl rematch could break wagering records. The Patriots were 12-point favorites four years ago, but the Giants earned a 17-14 win.

(AP) ? You've read his leaks. Now watch his show.

Cyber-transparency activist Julian Assange says he's launching a career in television, hosting what he's billing as a new brand of talk show built around the theme of "the world tomorrow."

The show's guests haven't been disclosed, but Assange has promised to give viewers more of what he's been supplying for years: Controversy.

The WikiLeaks secret-spilling site said in a statement released late Monday that "iconoclasts, visionaries and power insiders" would be brought in so that Assange could challenge them on their vision of world affairs and "their ideas on how to secure a brighter future."

The world of television talk shows is a new one for the 40-year-old Australian, whose group has orchestrated the biggest mass-disclosures of secret documents in U.S. history. But the statement argued that Assange was uniquely qualified for the role given his past as "a pioneer for a more just world and a victim of political repression."

Ellis Cashmore, an expert on celebrity culture at England's Staffordshire University, wasn't so sure.

"Assange has got a good, deep voice and agreeable Aussie accent, but he's a slow, deliberate talker and not especially televisual," Cashmore said in an email. "To be true to his image, he would have to make his proposed show subversive; and that might not appeal to many would-be guests."

WikiLeaks said that the show would begin airing in mid-March, although how the show will be produced and who will carry it are open questions.

It's not even clear Assange will be free to host the show. He's currently fighting extradition to Sweden, where he's wanted over sex crimes allegations, and U.S. officials are still weighing possible charges linked to his attention-grabbing leaks.

In its statement WikiLeaks referred queries about the series to the hitherto obscure Quick Roll Productions, whose website carried no indication of where the group was based or who was managing it. An online records search indicated that Quick Roll's site was created about two weeks ago.

Neither Quick Roll nor WikiLeaks returned emails seeking further details on their project.

Investing Gold and Buying Silver | FINANCE-WEB-GUIDE

Gold plays a crucial role keeping in mind the economical circle in our world alive. Most of the developed and third world countries of the world have committed to gold by means of shares. This can help different countries during economic downturns and works as a source of financial security. This means that gold investment is among the best investment options nowadays.
With time, gold has been proven as an even more stable store of worth when compared with currencies. If you?re holding Dollars or Euros, you will need to worry about sudden reduction in the confidence inside the particular currency. You might have seen that many countries that have indicated that they need to hold many Euro have backed off once they saw the collapse of the Greek economy. Whenever you look at the stock market, you may realize that the marketplace can crush overnight and turn billionaires to paupers, however, such a thing has never happened in the gold market.
Many people are never ready to start to see the dramatic changes which are coming, but instead prefer to reside in the concept of it wouldn?t happen here. The ones that head to the concept of gold investing and remain the course, will reap substantial rewards in the near future.

Back many years ago the standard was to have Ten percent of one?s portfolio in gold and silver coins. The times have changed plus a more realistic percentage will be 50 percent or even more. It will always be wise to understand that the buzz can be your friend, and right now the trend is changing to gold investing!
Gold is not only precious but in addition an uncommon resource. It is often used being an purchase of kinds of jewelry, gold bars, gold biscuits, coins, gold idols of God and Goddess, gold accessories and it has proved itself to become defiant to global economic disaster. Once the world markets crashed, gold was able to retain its value and so didn?t crash combined with markets. This is because of the stability that investors since centuries yearn to own it physically.

Another silver purchasing idea would be to make an investment into a silver mining company. With mining company investments, business energy is going to be greatly dictated through the company?s profit margins. And their profits rely on overhead costs in addition to numerous additional factors. When silver values commence to rise, their shares will too. Be advised that most sliver mining companies don?t only handle silver; typically, silver is mined alongside of copper and zinc. What this means is any profits you get from this kind of investment will greatly depend on other base metals besides silver.

People have opted to buy into metals for a very simple reason: Metals investing is merely more stable. Stock investments may go belly up, investment banks can close and realty prices can plummet.
The primary reason because of this high demand in gold investment can be a belief that rate of growth of bullion demand will quickly outpace the gold supply. The weak economy has forced many investors to improve their investment portfolios. Therefore, they?ve got rightly turned on the purchase of gold. A lot of the wise investors are actually keeping about 10 percent of the investments in the gold assets.
The main incentive for top gold investment demand is the belief that the rate of growth of need for bullion will outpace the provision of gold. The vulnerable economic situation has compelled the investors to diversify their domain portfolios. Hence, they have rightly looked to gold. The majority of the investors are actually holding no less than 10 percent of their investment holdings into real bullion or gold related assets. Bullioin is considered to be like an insurance policy against financial and monetary crisis.

Ice Cream Sandwich update for original Transformer coming 'mid-February,' says ASUS

Last we heard, the Ice Cream Sandwich update making its way to the O.G. Transformer was still "in the process of being approved" by the G-men. Although we've heard rumors that the holo-coated upgrade would come in February, nothing's been confirmed until now. ASUS replied to a life long fan's Facebook post, revealing that the update should arrive "mid-February." We know hearing the news that you'll have to keep waiting might not stop you from rolling on the floor and throwing a temper tantrum, but hey, you could not be getting one at all.

[Thanks, Udupa]

Official: EU open to Iran talks as embargo looms (AP)

BRUSSELS ? The EU's foreign policy chief said Monday that the international community remains open to talks with Iran, even as an EU embargo on Iranian oil seems set to be approved Monday.

Catherine Ashton said in a statement that the international community ? specifically, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, the U.S., Russia and China ? have "a continued willingness to engage" with Iran regarding that country's nuclear program.

Ashton also released the text of a letter she sent in October to Saeed Jalili, Iran's top nuclear negotiator. The letter said Ashton's overall goal is a negotiated solution that "restores international confidence in the exclusively peaceful nature of Iran's nuclear program."

The letter was dated Oct. 21. Ashton said she has received no reply. Officials in many other countries fear Iran is working to develop nuclear weapons ? something Iran denies.

Meanwhile, diplomats said Friday that EU foreign ministers meeting Monday in Brussels will likely approve a ban on buying Iranian oil, even though working out the details of the embargo will be left for later. The embargo would immediately prohibit the signing of any new oil contracts with Iran.

However, important details on the embargo would likely still remain to be negotiated. Those include the date by which existing contracts to buy Iranian oil would no longer be held to be valid, and the nature of a review of the effects so far of the embargo prior to that date.

The U.K., Germany and France are eager for a strong embargo on Iranian oil to be implemented quickly. But Greece, which has deep financial troubles, benefits from low prices it pays for Iranian oil, and it wants assurances that the embargo will not become a financial burden it cannot bear.

LMFAO's "Party Rock Anthem," Reenacted in MS Paint

To think, you probably only considered the lyrics to "Party Rock Anthem" kind of asinine before now. If you even realized the catchy hip-hop/dance track had lyrics.

It does, and we're proud to present to you, below, a literal interpretation of LMFAO's hit single in Microsoft Paint form. Nicely done once again, Internet.

We previously brought you the music of Chris Brown set to MS Paint, and this is rather similar. Only more absurd, given some of the lyrics involved. Watch in awe:

Rick Santorum Declared Iowa Caucus Winner Following Recount

Mitt Romney is suddenly looking for win #2 in a row rather than #3.

While the former Massachusetts governor appeared to eke out a slim eight-vote win in the Iowa caucus on January 3, the Des Moines Register reports that the final count of the vote puts former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum ahead by 34.

After a long night of vote-counting, Romney appeared to post the slimmest-ever margin of victory in Iowa, but GOP officials discovered inaccuracies in 131 precincts, not all of which affected the final vote, but which threw the race to Santorum.

Romney, Santorum

Rick Santorum won 29,839 votes to Mitt Romney's 29,805. In essence, state GOP officials said, Iowa's results come down to a virtual tie, or "split decision."

NBC News will still not declare a winner in the Iowa caucus, saying with results from eight precincts out of 1,774 missing, it is impossible to know who won.

Nevertheless, Santorum declared victory today after the updated results were posted.

What does this mean going forward? Not much. Romney put up a decisive victory in New Hampshire Jan. 10, while Santorum has faded fast since Iowa.

It does deprive Romney of bragging rights, though, and the story could help dissuade primary voters in South Carolina that he is the inevitable nominee.

South Carolina's critical primary is Saturday, with Romney looking to hold off a surging Newt Gingrich, who shot past Santorum after Monday's debate.

Newt got more good news today with Rick Perry dropping out and throwing his support behind him - and in essence giving him more screen time at tonight's debate.

Then again, Marianne Gingrich also started doing interviews.
