Look, no hands! Augmented reality gets a grip

FRANKFURT/HELSINKI One day in March 2000, just days before the dot-com bubble began its journey back to earth, German engineer Thomas Alt first glimpsed the future of technology.

"Do you know augmented reality?" his boss at Volkswagen asked.

He did not.

"Neither do I, but you are about to, because this will be your project," he said, dropping a stack of papers on his desk.

For the next three years, Alt developed a technology that overlays text or graphics on real-life images and objects. The resulting hybrid can be viewed on a smartphone, tablet or PC screen, and soon - the tech geek's fantasy - through dedicated specs.

Today, 37-year-old Alt partly owns Munich-based Metaio, one of the leading companies in the rapidly growing augmented reality (AR) industry. Along with dozens of other products, Alt has created an AR manual for Audi cars.

No more leafing through a crumpled manual to find out why the aircon's blowing hot in August. Point your phone at the offending gadget, and instructions pop up on the screen.

Augmented reality has been called the eighth mass medium, after print, recordings, cinema, radio, television, Internet and mobile phones.

By reaching out to media companies, the industry, which was a collection of smartphone apps generating less than $2 million in 2010, is on the verge of becoming a real business worth perhaps $1.5 billion in 2015.

"In the early days, we were talking about visionary ideas for the future. Today we come up with business models and products," said Maarten Lens-FitzGerald, co-founder and general manager at Layar, a Dutch start-up.

Layar, whose software has been downloaded more than 20 million times, hooking 3 million active users, has the world's most used consumer AR application, a reality browser that helps find services nearby, acquiring info on anything from favorite restaurants to networking opportunities via a mobile camera.

"We are actually making money and are becoming a little boring. But that is what the industry needs right now," said Lens-FitzGerald. "We actually try to hold back on visionary ideas. We are getting out of the gimmicky stuff."

Layar's demonstration video went viral in 2009. It showed period houses as seen from a boat on Amsterdam's canals. By pointing a camera at the houses, information about which were for sale and their prices is layered on the camera image.

Not for the faint-hearted, but another eye-opener for the house hunter, SpotCrime, by Popvox, will people the scene with the stylized muggers, murderers and burglars that have graced the neighborhood, too.

Chips with virtually everything
Sector executives speaking at the Reuters Media and Technology summit said most interest for their products came from the publishing industry and e-commerce.

Sweden's Ikea, famed for its low-price flat-pack furniture, has an app that lets you point a camera at a spot in your room and overlays an image of the furniture you are thinking of buying. Assembly is still down to you.

Heavy hitters are now throwing their weight behind the concept. Qualcomm, the top wireless chip maker, has bought up AR assets and opened its platform for software developers in 2010. ARM is also adding AR features to the chips it designs.

Chipmaker Intel has invested $14 million in Layar through its venture arm and is looking to add AR features to its chips.

Intel anticipated that ways of controlling a phone without touching it, such as by voice or by gesture, would be the next big developments.

The challenge is to make money out of those features.

"We would certainly anticipate a sharp rise in service adoption, although we would suggest that, given the continued uncertainty surrounding optimal monetization models, 2015 revenues are unlikely to exceed the $1.5 billion," said Juniper Research director Windsor Holden.

Laurence Tetrel Poupart, chief operating officer at Total Immersion, one of AR's front runners, agrees.

The company has been around since 1999 and expects to double sales this year to 20 million euros, but Tetrel Poupart said the technology has a little further to go to become a reliable money-spinner.

"We would definitely like to go for the virtual trying on of clothes, but some technical issues need to be resolved," she said, adding that the company needed faster chips to make the 'virtual dressing room' take off.

"We don't want you to see whether the clothing suits you but that it actually fits. We don't want it to be a gimmick, we want to have true usage, to reduce the return rate for the e-commerce merchants."

Try before you buy
Simpler applications have found their way to consumers, and businesses are very keen to use them.

Thomas Alt's Audi manual is one example. Another is a Layar application that helps publishers more easily link print and digital content. By pointing their smartphones at a magazine, readers can get information about products featured in articles, and go on to buy them.

"At the same time, companies get loads of feedback about consumer behavior, which they can use for marketing purposes," said Alt, who has also developed a similar product for German magazine Stern, owned by Bertelsmann's Gruner + Jahr publishers.

Currently more than 10 million German magazines with AR features hit the shelves every month, including titles from publisher Axel Springer.

Companies are lining up to use the technology, said Tetrel Poupart. "But we are now in a phase that we need to discourage companies from going for another gimmick."

Total Immersion has seen strong interest in its software, which allows consumers to try on glasses without physically touching them.

There is still a long way to go before augmented reality catches up with the movies, however; it is nearly three decades since Arnold Schwarzenegger as the Terminator viewed mission-critical data and images projected on the inside of his aviator shades.

Google has launched what it has dubbed "Project Glass" to develop such features, but it is viewed as a long shot.

"Since I started, this has been the ultimate dream in the industry. I don't buy it so much," Tetrel Poupart said.

"It makes you dizzy. I think we should use augmented reality in a more simple way and use the tablet. The tablet is a key device. It is here."

Eventually she expects traditional television screens - connected to the Internet with a built-in camera - to be a significant driver for both AR and the e-commerce industry.

"You use your television set as a mirror, trying on and ordering your clothes from your home."

Buyer beware -- if the trend continues, you'll have nowhere to go to wear them.

At nearly four feet tall, the Emperor penguin is Antarctica's largest sea bird?and thanks to films like "March of the Penguins" and "Happy Feet," it's also one of the continent's most iconic. If global temperatures continue to rise, however, the Emperor penguins in Terre Ad?lie, in East Antarctica may eventually disappear, according to a new study by led by researchers from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI). The study was published in the June 20th edition of the journal Global Change Biology.

"Over the last century, we have already observed the disappearance of the Dion Islets penguin colony, close to the West Antarctic Peninsula," says Stephanie Jenouvrier, WHOI biologist and lead author of the new study. "In 1948 and the 1970s, scientists recorded more than 150 breeding pairs there. By 1999, the population was down to just 20 pairs, and in 2009, it had vanished entirely." Like in Terre Ad?lie, Jenouvrier thinks the decline of those penguins might be connected to a simultaneous decline in Antarctic sea ice due to warming temperatures in the region.

Unlike other sea birds, Emperor penguins breed and raise their young almost exclusively on sea ice. If that ice breaks up and disappears early in the breeding season, massive breeding failure may occur, says Jenouvrier. "As it is, there's a huge mortality rate just at the breeding stages, because only 50 percent of chicks survive to the end of the breeding season, and then only half of those fledglings survive until the next year," she says.

Disappearing sea ice may also affect the penguins' food source. The birds feed primarily on fish, squid, and krill, a shrimplike animal, which in turn feeds on zooplankton and phytoplankton, tiny organisms that grow on the underside of the ice. If the ice goes, Jenouvrier says, so too will the plankton, causing a ripple effect through the food web that may starve the various species that penguins rely on as prey.

To project how penguin populations may fare in the future, Jenouvrier's team used data from several different sources, including climate models, sea ice forecasts, and a demographic model that Jenouvrier created of the Emperor penguin population at Terre Ad?lie, a coastal region of Antarctica where French scientists have conducted penguin observations for more than 50 years.

Combining this type of long-term population data with information on climate was key to the study, says Hal Caswell, a WHOI senior mathematical biologist and collaborator on the paper.

"If you want to study the effects of climate on a particular species, there are three pieces that you have to put together," he says. "The first is a description of the entire life cycle of the organism, and how individuals move through that life cycle. The second piece is how the cycle is affected by climate variables. And the crucial third piece is a prediction of what those variables may look like in the future, which involves collaboration with climate scientists."

Marika Holland of the National Center for Atmospheric Research is one such scientist. She specializes in studying the relationship between sea ice and global climate, and helped the team identify climate models for use in the study.

Working with Julienne Stroeve, another sea ice specialist from the National Snow and Ice Data Center, Holland ultimately recommended five distinct models. "We picked the models based on how well they calculated the sea ice cover for the 20th century," she says. "If a model predicted an outcome that matched what was actually observed, we felt it was likely that its projections of sea ice change in the future could be trusted."

Jenouvrier used the output from these various climate models to determine how changes in temperature and sea ice might affect the Emperor penguin population at Terre Ad?lie. She found that if greenhouse gas emissions continue to rise at levels similar to today?causing temperatures to rise and Antarctic sea ice to shrink?penguin population numbers will diminish slowly until about 2040, after which they would decline at a much steeper rate as sea ice coverage drops below a usable threshold.

"Our best projections show roughly 500 to 600 breeding pairs remaining by the year 2100. Today, the population size is around 3000 breeding pairs," says Jenouvrier.

The effect of rising temperature in the Antarctic isn't just a penguin problem, according to Caswell. As sea ice coverage continues to shrink, the resulting changes in the Antarctic marine environment will affect other species, and may affect humans as well.

"We rely on the functioning of those ecosystems. We eat fish that come from the Antarctic. We rely on nutrient cycles that involve species in the oceans all over the world," he says. "Understanding the effects of climate change on predators at the top of marine food chains?like Emperor penguins?is in our best interest, because it helps us understand ecosystems that provide important services to us."

Sandusky?is charged with 51 criminal counts for alleged abuse of 10 boys over 15 years. He has denied the allegations but acknowledged in interviews following his arrest that he had showered with boys.

The accusers described for jurors a range of sexual abuse at his hands, from allegations of grooming and fondling to oral sex and forced anal sex that one young man said left him injured. The identities of two other alleged victims are unknown to investigators.

The defense has suggested the accusers have financial motivations for their claims and were improperly influenced by investigators. They also put on character witnesses who spoke of?Sandusky's?sound reputation and his wife, who said her husband didn't do anything inappropriate.

The defense rested after an approximately 40-minute closed-door meeting involving attorneys,?Sandusky?and the judge overseeing the case. Under Pennsylvania law, a defendant must waive his right to testify on his own behalf, but it doesn't have to happen in open court.

The next step in the trial is closing arguments, set for Thursday morning.

Earlier Wednesday, the defense sought to undercut testimony from a former graduate assistant who told jurors he saw?Sandusky?sexually abusing a boy inside a football facility shower.

Dr. Jonathan Dranov, a family friend of Mike McQueary, said he spoke to McQueary the night McQueary claimed to have seen?Sandusky?engaging in a sex act with a boy of about 10.

Dranov testified that McQueary described hearing "sexual sounds" and seeing a boy in the shower and an arm reach around him and pull him out of view. McQueary said he made eye-contact with the boy and?Sanduskylater emerged from the showers, Dranov said.

That account differs from what McQueary told a grand jury that investigated?Sandusky?and what he told jurors last week.

McQueary testified he saw?Sandusky?pressing a boy up against the wall inside the shower, and that he had no doubt he was witnessing anal sex. McQueary's report to his superiors ? and Penn State officials' failure to go to outside law enforcement ? is what ultimately led to the firing of longtime coach Joe Paterno.

Dranov told the jury that McQueary didn't provide him with a graphic description of what he saw, but described hearing sounds he considered sexual in nature.

"It just seemed to make him upset so I backed off that," Dranov said.

When prosecutors asked Dranov to describe McQueary's demeanor, he said the former Penn State starting quarterback was clearly upset.

"His voice was trembling. His hands were shaking. He was visibly shaken," Dranov said.

McQueary had testified earlier in the trial that he wasn't "over-descriptive" in his conversation with Dranov, saying he told the doctor that what he saw was sexual, wrong and perverse.

The morning also featured testimony from more defense character witnesses, including a couple of participants in?Sandusky's?youth charity, The Second Mile. Prosecutors allege that?Sandusky?met his alleged victims through The Second Mile, which once was lauded for its efforts to help at-risk children.

One of the former Second Mile participants, David Hilton, said he felt like investigators were trying to coach him into accusing?Sandusky.

"When it got to the second or third time I felt like they wanted me to say something that isn't true," he said.

The defense has sought to portray investigators as planting the seeds for accusations against?Sandusky?by sharing details of other alleged victims' claims.

Before the start of testimony Wednesday, a female juror was excused for an illness and replaced by an alternate, also a woman.
