With more than one-third of American adults classified as obese, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, national programs and initiatives have sprouted to address weight issues earlier in life. Childhood obesity, defined as a body mass index at or above the 95th percentile for youth of the same age and sex, now affects 17% of all children and adolescents in the U.S., the CDC reports. This is triple the rate of a generation ago.

Because of the increase in childhood obesity, national initiatives, such as first lady Michelle Obama?s Let?s Move! Campaign, have encouraged parents, teachers and students to pay closer attention to food intake and activity levels. Schools also are dedicated to combatting the problem; for example, Wellspring Academy in Brevard, N.C., a boarding school for obese children ages 11 to 19.

New York and New Jersey programs also are doing their part toward prevention. In 2010, the NuHealth Foundation, the philanthropic arm of NuHealth System in East Meadow, N.Y., conducted a study of sixth- and eighth-grade students in the Roosevelt (N.Y.) Union Free School District to assess students? BMIs and the prevalence of overweight and obese children. The results of the study showed 44% of the students in the Long Island school district were overweight or obese, higher than the CDC?s national average of about 30%.

Egypt's Morsi vows to be 'servant of the people'

Mohamed Morsi took the oath of office on Saturday to become Egypt's first Islamist president and its first elected head of state since the revolt that overthrew Hosni Mubarak overthrow last year.

The ceremony took place in the constitutional court rather than parliament, the result of an ongoing tussle with the military that took charge after Mubarak's overthrow and insists on retaining broad powers now.

"I swear by the Almighty God to sincerely preserve the republican order and to respect the constitution and law, and completely care for the people's interest," he said at the ceremony at the court.

Morsi had wanted to take the oath before parliament, but the military has disbanded the Islamist-dominated house following a court order.

In an address at Cairo University following his swearing-in, Morsi thanked the military for seeing through the presidential elections but pointedly mentioned the "elected parliament" several times.

"The elected institutions will return to fulfilling their roles. And the great military will devote itself to the task of protecting the country," he told his audience, which included the military's leader, Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi.

He then set out some of his international and domestic objectives, saying he would be a "servant of the people" in a "democractic, modern and constitutional state".

Internationally, he said Egypt respected would back the Palestinians and called for an end to the bloodshed in Syria.

"I announce from here that Egypt, its people and presidential institution stand with the Palestinian people until they regain all their rights," he said.

"We support the Syrian people. We want the bloodshed to stop," he added.

He repeated that Egypt would respect its international treaties, in an allusion to its 1979 peace accord with Israel.

"We carry a message of peace to the world, accompanied and preceded by a message of right and justice."

Morsi, who resigned from the Muslim Brotherhood after winning the election this month, had spoken out forcefully in support of Palestinians during his campaign.

The Brotherhood is vehemently opposed to Syrian president Bashar al-Asad and supports the uprising against him.

But as president, Morsi is not expected to radically change his country's foreign policy, especially towards Israel, in which the military is expected to exercise its clout.

In a Friday speech before tens of thousands of supporters in Cairo's Tahrir Square, the epicentre of the revolt that ousted Mubarak, he said that he would insist on retaining all the presidency's powers.

"I renounce none of the prerogatives of president," he said.. "You are the source of power and legitimacy," he told his supporters.

"There is no place for anyone or any institution ... above this will."

The Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) assumed parliament's powers after disbanding it and also formed a powerful national security council headed by the president but dominated by the generals.

The military also reserves the right to appoint a new constituent assembly should the one elected by parliament be disbanded by a court decision expected on September 1.

The Muslim Brotherhood insists that only parliament can appoint the assembly.

Media reports said Morsi was consulting a cross-section of Egyptian society before appointing a premier and a cabinet made up mostly of technocrats.

In a meeting with newspaper editors reported by most dailies on Friday, he pledged there would be "no Islamisation of state institutions" during his presidency.

Morsi has already met SCAF head Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi, as well as a delegation from the Sunni body Al-Azhar and another representing Egypt's Coptic church.

International Monetary Fund chief Christine Lagarde has told him the lender stands ready to help Egypt, whose tourism-dependent economy took a battering in the upheaval that accompanied and followed Mubarak's overthrow, a spokeswoman said on Friday.

Morsi became the Brotherhood's candidate to succeed Mubarak only after its first choice, Khairat El-Shater, was disqualified. He beat Ahmed Shafiq, Mubarak's last premier, with 51.73 percent of the vote.

Many had written him off as an uncharismatic substitute, saying he would be unable to muster widespread support.

But the powerful Brotherhood mobilised its formidable resources and supporters behind Morsi, who was appointed last year to head its political arm, the Freedom and Justice Party.

In a 2005 election, which gave the Brotherhood one fifth of the seats in parliament, Morsi kept his seat. But he was soon arrested and jailed for seven months after taking part in protests supporting reformist judges.

By the 2010 election, Morsi had become a spokesman for the Islamists and a member of their politburo.

World's most powerful rocket launches secret US satellite

A new spy satellite launched into orbit on a secret mission for the U.S. military Friday (June 29), roaring spaceward atop the world's most powerful rocket in use today.

The NROL-15 reconnaissance satellite blasted off from a launch pad at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida at 9:15 a.m. EDT (1315 GMT) to begin its classified mission for the National Reconnaissance Office. It rode a towering?Delta 4-Heavy booster?equipped with new RS-68A first stage engines ? the most powerful liquid hydrogen rocket engines ever built, according to their manufactures.

Built by Pratt and Whitney Rocketdyne, the new RS-68A engines are each capable of generating 702,000 pounds of thrust and are more efficient than a previous design, the rocket engine builders said, adding that the engine generates 36,000 more pounds of thrust than its predecessor. Three of the new rocket engines made their space launch debut in Friday's Delta 4-Heavy flight by rocket provider United Launch Alliance.

The Delta 4-Heavy rocket is currently the largest and most powerful rocket in service. The booster features three core rocket boosters and is topped with a second stage to place payloads into orbit. It is 235 feet tall (72 meters) and can carry payloads of up to 24 tons into low-Earth orbit and 11 tons to geosynchronous orbits.

Friday's launch came after several delays for the Delta 4-Heavy. The rocket was initially slated to blast off on Thursday, but ULA and Air Force officials pushed the launch back 24 hours due to?weather delays from Tropical Storm Debby.

During today's liftoff, a fuel valve problem prompted launch controllers to repeatedly hold the countdown. But the glitch was ultimately resolved, clearing the booster for flight.

The successful launch marked the second space mission in nine days by ULA to orbit a classified payload for the U.S. military. The company, a joint launch services endeavor by Boeing and Lockheed Martin,?launched the NROL-38 spy satellite?into orbit just last week on June 20.

"Phew! 2 launches in 9 days. Who says things slow down in summer!" ULA officials wrote in a Twitter post just after liftoff.

ULA officials broadcast the secret NROL-15 satellite's launch live, but cut the feed off four minutes after liftoff at the request of NRO officials, a typical action for U.S. reconnaissance satellite launches. ?

The next ULA launch will be an Atlas 5 rocket slated to loft another NRO spy satellite into orbit in August. That mission is expected to launch from the Vandenberg Air Force Station in California.

Mount Vernon Baptist Church will dedicate new stained glass windows in its sanctuary at 11 a.m. Sunday.

Work was done by Shobe's Stained Glass of Huntington.

Stained glass sections were donated in memory of Howard and Jean Crimmel by family.

Senior pastor of Mount Vernon Baptist is the Rev. Ron McClung.

Euro deal leaves deep divisions, questions

A "breakthrough" agreement by European leaders?desperate to show the world they haven?t run out of ideas to save the eurozone?is short on details and does little more than buy time, analysts said Friday.

And after 21 summit meetings convened to?head off the looming breakup of Europe?s common currency and the continent's ongoing downward economic spiral, it is not clear how much time the deal?to shore up wobbly banks will buy.

?Every time they come out with something, it seems to lasts an increasingly smaller amount of time,? said Guy Wolf, a market strategist at commodities broker Marex Specton in London. ?I don't see anything in this current statement that makes me think someone will go and build a factory in Spain. And that's what we're really talking about.?

With Greece?s economy in ruins, Spain?s banks on life support and Italy?s borrowing costs rising, eurozone leaders broke out the fire hoses at their latest meeting in Brussels.

The new measures, hammered out after 14 hours of contentious talks that pitted Rome and Madrid against Europe's paymaster Berlin, amounted to a willingness to bend the European Union?s existing aid rules to shore up failing banks and try to bring down rising borrowing costs that are strangling the weaker?economies.

Under the latest plan, Europe?s two bailout funds will be allowed to buy bank shares directly instead of channeling the money through member governments. But the agreement included little detail on just how the new measures would be implemented.

It?s not clear, for example, who will decide which banks get funds, how much they?ll get or what conditions will be imposed in return for bailouts. Failed banks would be taken over by the European Central Bank, which currently has no system in place to do so.

With expectations for the summit so low, ?financial markets staged a ?relief? rally after the deal was announced. The euro rose sharply against the dollar and yields on Spanish and Italian debt fell sharply. The Dow Jones industrial average was up more than 220 points in midday trading.

?We have avoided an Armageddon scenario ? at least for the summer,? said Tai Hui, chief economist at?Standard Chartered?Bank.

But the agreement does little to bridge the widening political and economic divisions that continue to threaten Europe?s common currency and economic future.

The summit was supposed to have addressed Greece?s urgent need for assistance. Leaders of the newly formed Athens government, facing insolvency within weeks, have vowed to roll back German-imposed austerity measures that were agreed to by the former Athens government in return for aid.

A volatile confrontation between Athens and Berlin was averted when Greece?s new prime minister last week cancelled his trip for health reasons, and the newly appointed finance minister was replaced, also for health reasons. The long-running standoff between Greece and Germany remains unresolved. ?

With Greece off the agenda, attention at the two-day Brussels summit turned to the more imminent crisis in Spain, which recently asked for a bank bailout that could reach 100 billion euros ($125 billion).?

Some economists believe the bank bailout may be a preamble to a wider bailout of the Spanish government, which has recently seen its credit ratings slashed and borrowing costs rise to unsustainable levels.?While some economists and eurozone officials believe the impact of Greece's departure from the common currency could be managed, Spain's much-larger economy and pool of outstanding debt poses a greater risk. ??

The fallout from Spain has also pushed up borrowing costs for the Italian government, Europe?s third-largest economy and most heavily indebted eurozone country.

Friday?s summit agreement was aimed at calming investors who have been fleeing Spanish banks and government bonds. But it remains to be seen how much investor confidence the proposed bank backstop measures can restore in Spanish and Italian government bonds.

?There are a number of uncertainties about the conditions applied to (the backstop) and the rating agency?s reaction to countries applying for outside help,? said Philippe Bodereau, head of European credit research at PIMCO.

The summit brought into sharper focus the deepening divisions among European leaders, as Germany increasingly finds itself cast in the role of Europe?s financial guarantor. As the Europe?s largest economy enjoys relative prosperity ? thanks in part to massive capital flight into German banks and government bonds ? German voters have grown increasingly wary of further calls to commit their hard-earned savings to bail out their neighbors. ?

Following this week's summit, some reports suggested that German Chancellor Angela Merkel appeared to soften her steadfast opposition to guaranteeing other country?s debts. But with voter resistance to the idea running high back home, Germany?s leaders can ill-afford to?commit?to paying the bills of other euro zone governments.

?Germany has no good options,? said Wolf. ?They either pay an incredibly large bill when the euro area breaks up or sign themselves up to a perpetual series of transfers to the rest of the euro area. So it's not surprising that they are stalling that decision for as long as possible. Because no politician wants to be saddled with that answer.?
