Mexico leftist leader calls rally after election upheld

AFP - Mexico's defeated leftist leader Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador called for civil disobedience Friday after a court rejected his bid to overturn Enrique Pena Nieto's presidential election win.

Lopez Obrador refused to recognize the ruling of the electoral tribunal after it dismissed his bid to scrap the July 1 election over claims that Pena Nieto's party bought millions of votes and violated campaign spending rules.

"The elections were neither clean nor free nor genuine, therefore I will not recognize an illegitimate administration that emerged from votes that were bought and other grave violations of the constitution," he told reporters.

The former Mexico City mayor called on his followers to gather for a demonstration in the capital's historic main square, the Zocalo, on September 9, and to decide the way forward.

"Civil disobedience is an honorable duty when it is aimed against thieves who steal the hope and happiness of the people," he said. "I call on all supporters of democracy to gather at the Zocalo."

Lopez Obrador had led mass protests in Mexico City in 2006 after he lost that year's election to Felipe Calderon, of the conservative National Action Party, by a mere 0.06 percentage points.

But he was unable to change the outcome.

This time, the electoral court unanimously ruled that he had failed to prove that Pena Nieto's Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) bought five million votes, violated campaign spending limits and enjoyed biased news coverage.

Pena Nieto, who has rejected his opponent's allegations, won the election with 38.2 percent of the vote compared to 31.6 percent for Lopez Obrador, who lost by 3.3 million ballots.

The electoral court meets again later Friday to officially declare Pena Nieto the president-elect, clearing the way for him to take power on December 1 and return the PRI to the nation's highest office after a 12-year hiatus.

Pena Nieto will inherit from Calderon a brutal drug war that has left more than 50,000 people dead since 2006. Calderon did not run due to term limits.

The PRI governed Mexico with an authoritarian hand for 71 years until it lost the 2000 presidential election, but Pena Nieto has promised to break with his party's checkered past during his six-year term.

"It is time to begin a new phase of work in favor of Mexico," Pena Nieto wrote on Twitter late Thursday after the court ruling, offering dialogue "for the unity and greatness of Mexico."

Lopez Obrador's coalition claimed that the PRI distributed gift cards to voters in return for their votes. The left also charged that children were sent to polling stations to check how people voted.

But the seven judges of the electoral court ruled that the leftist coalition failed to prove its allegations.

"We had free and genuine elections," said Judge Salvador Olimpo Nava Gomar. "Mexico will have a president elected by the people, the citizen Enrique Pena Nieto."

Lopez Obrador's campaign manager Ricardo Monreal said the judges had acted like a "band of scoundrels."

Outside the court Thursday night, some 300 protesters shouted "Mexico without the PRI," brought down barriers and threw water bottles, corncobs and stones toward the court, as riot police watched passively.

The movement #Yosoy132, which organized protests against Pena Nieto during this year's campaign, has warned that it will lead a "funeral march to bury democracy."

How cool water eased hurricane Isaac's rage

Caroline Morley, online picture researcher

On the eve of Katrina's seventh anniversary, hurricane Isaac made its first landfall in Louisiana last night. But a period spent over cooler water means it will not follow Katrina's destructive footsteps. On landfall, Isaac was designated as category 1 on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale.

In August 2005, hurricane Katrina also arrived in Louisiana having travelled across the Gulf of Mexico. It wrought huge devastation in New Orleans. Katrina developed from a category 3 to a category 5 storm when it passed over warm water from the Gulf Stream's Loop Current - the heat of the water intensified the storm. When it hit land, Katrina's intensity fell to category 4 but still managed to cause billions of dollars' worth of damage and kill around 1700 people.

Following a path around the Loop Current and over cooler water means Isaac's sustained winds reached a maximum 130 kilometres per hour compared to the 224 km/h winds of Katrina's landfall. Isaac did spend a short time over a warm eddy in the Gulf of Mexico but then a cool eddy took away the energy it had gained. Still, as a tropical storm Isaac killed 24 in Haiti and five in the Dominican Republic.

Despite being low on the hurricane scale, warnings are still in place for cities in Isaac's path, with many people choosing to evacuate. Slow movement of the hurricane raises the possibility of flooding, says the National Hurricane Center, and there may also be tornadoes as Isaac moves inland.

Rights group sees police beat W.Sahara protester

Human rights observers visiting Moroccan-held Western Sahara witnessed a woman protester being beaten by police and hospitalised, a member of the group said on Wednesday.

"We saw the woman being beaten. And then we went to hospital, where we found her badly injured," Santiago Canton, director of the Robert F. Kennedy Partners for Human Rights, told AFP by phone from a Sahrawi refugee camp in western Algeria.

"The police were very aggressive. We were told by people there that the situation has been like that for some time," he said.

The incident took place earlier this week in Laayoune, the main city under Moroccan control, during a visit to the disputed territory by the delegation, which is led by Kerry Kennedy, president of the RFK Centre for Justice and Human Rights.

In a statement published by the Washington-based group on Tuesday, the day the delegation left for Algeria, Kennedy described how a policeman lunged at her 17-year-old daughter's camera as she took photos of the incident.

Canton emphasised that the purpose of the trip was to assess the human rights situation on the ground.

He said that while the Moroccan authorities cooperated with the observers, "unfortunately they had a group of people following us everywhere we went."

The visit comes amid a row between the United Nations and Rabat, which has demanded the replacement of new UN peace envoy Christopher Ross, whom it accuses of "bias" in efforts to resolve the status of the territory.

Morocco annexed the Western Sahara in 1975 in a move never recognised by the international community.

The rebel Polisario Front, which has been campaigning for the territory's independence since before its annexation, controls a small part the desert interior and has bases in Tindouf, across the Algerian border, where some 40,000 refugees live in extreme conditions.

The rights observers travelled to Tindouf on Wednesday, where they met rights activists and families of the victims of Africa's longest-running conflict.

They were due to meet representatives of UN agencies and NGOs working there before holding talks with Polisario leaders.

"It is moving to see women who have such terrible stories of human rights violations committed against them or their relatives not admit to being defeated or broken," Kennedy was quoted as saying by the official Algerian news agency APS.

Some Moroccan MPs have strongly criticised the group's visit.

Morocco's Foreign Minister Saad Eddine El Otmani, cited by the official MAP news agency on Wednesday, said he hoped the visit to Western Sahara and Tindouf would allow the group "to realise the gross abuses suffered by the populations in the camps."

The delegation will publish a report at the end of the trip, which is due to wind up on Thursday.

Golf Lessons For Beginners - Getting Your Drives On The Fairways

If you can learn to master your golf shots so that you hit the ball accurately you will find that your statistics for hitting the fairways and greens in regulation will dramatically increase. This in turn translates into playing better golf all round. Here are some tips I found from reading golf lessons for beginners from the top players who have game plans to keep the ball on the short grass. Although it is exciting to watch some top players scramble from the most horrendous of situations, as an amateur, it is better to avoid that stress, and discover ways in which you can find more fairways.

As you can hit the ball further with your driver there is potentially a greater chance of the ball going astray. This means that it is harder to hit your target. Think about the wind direction and how that will impact on the ball direction. Find out where there may be traps which you need to avoid. Then choose a spot on the fairway as your target. Visualize your ball flying in the air so that you see the shot before you play it. Remember to keep your golf swing the same for the driver as you would for your irons. The power in your driver swing comes from the longer swing arc so don't try to hit it harder.

When driving distribute your weight equally over both feet as you address the ball. An error at set up can lead to other faults. Beginner golf lessons always emphasize the concept of sticking with sound fundamentals. Make sure that most of your weight is not resting on your heels as this would then mean you are too far away from the ball. This would then affect the path of your club as you take it away and your weight shift will not be correct with the result of a poor shot - either a low cut or pulling the ball. The tip here sounds simple but many players have too much weight either on their heels or balls of the feet.

At the top of your backswing try to achieve a well wound up position. Your weight should be focussed on your right side. The weight is then shifted to the left side as you make your downswing. Keep the club out in front of you as make the downswing. If it gets stuck behind your body on the downswing then your shot will not be a good one.

So, there are a couple of tips that I found from some beginner golf lessons to help you find more fairways and avoid having to make those scrambling shots.

'Nano machine shop' shapes nanowires, ultrathin films

ScienceDaily (Aug. 29, 2012) ? A new "nano machine shop" that shapes nanowires and ultrathin films could represent a future manufacturing method for tiny structures with potentially revolutionary properties.

The structures might be tuned for applications ranging from high-speed electronics to solar cells and also may have greater strength and unusual traits such as ultrahigh magnetism and "plasmonic resonance," which could lead to improved optics, computers and electronics.

The researchers used their technique to stamp nano- and microgears; form tiny circular shapes out of a material called graphene, an ultrathin sheet of carbon that holds promise for advanced technologies; and change the shape of silver nanowires, said Gary Cheng, an associate professor of industrial engineering at Purdue University.

"We do this shaping at room temperature and atmospheric pressure, like a nano-machine shop," said Cheng, who is working with doctoral students Ji Li, Yiliang Liao, Ting-Fung Chung and Sergey Suslov and physics professor Yong P. Chen.

Graphene and nanowires -- filaments 1,000 times thinner than a human hair -- have numerous potential applications. However, technologies are needed to tailor them for specific uses. The new method, called laser shock-induced shaping, makes it possible to tune nanowires by altering electrical and optoelectrical properties that are critical for electronic components.

The researchers also have shown how laser shock-induced shaping can be used to change the properties of graphene, a step toward harnessing the material for electronic applications.

Findings were detailed in research papers published in the journal Nano Letters, and the work also was highlighted earlier this month in the News and Views section of the journal Nature Photonics.

The technique works by using a multilayered sandwich structure that has a tiny mold at the bottom. Nanowires were situated directly above the mold, and other materials were layered between the nanowires and a glass cover sheet. Exposing this layered "forming unit" to an ultra-fast pulsing laser causes one of the layers to burn up, generating a downward pressure that forces the nanowires into the mold and changes their shape.

"The process could be scaled up for an industrial roll-to-roll manufacturing process by changing laser beam size and scanning speed," Cheng said. "The laser shock-induced shaping approach is fast and low-cost."

Part of the research, funded by the National Science Foundation, was carried out in a specialized clean room at the Birck Nanotechnology Center in Purdue's Discovery Park.

Abortion debate shows differences of Romney, Ryan

(AP) ? Differences between Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan's positions ? this time on hot-button social issues ? were on display Wednesday as the GOP ticket found itself dragged into a debate over abortion.

The vice presidential candidate emphasized anew that Romney is the nominee, brushing aside differences in their records.

"I'm proud of my record. Mitt Romney's going to be the president and the president sets policy. His policy is exceptions for rape incest and life of the mother. I'm comfortable with it because it's a good step in the right direction," Ryan told reporters as his campaign plane flew from Virginia to North Carolina.

Romney does not oppose abortion in cases of rape and incest or if it will save the mother's life, while Ryan does oppose abortion in cases of rape and incest.

Since choosing Ryan as his running mate, Romney has been dogged by questions about how his own views differ from the Wisconsin congressman's. Ryan is the architect of a controversial budget blueprint that would dramatically change Medicare and cut funds for a series of other popular programs. After his selection Democrats immediately began trying to tie Romney to his new No. 2's plan, with President Barack Obama launching a new push on cuts to education this week. Romney says his own budget plan is different from Ryan's, but he largely refused to outline specifics of the differences. Instead, he's emphasizing what he calls shared principles and insisting that Ryan joined the Romney ticket, and not the other way around.

The focus on abortion comes in the wake of comments from Missouri Senate candidate Todd Akin, who is challenging Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill. Asked in an interview aired Sunday if abortion should be legal in cases of rape, Akin said: "If it's a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down."

Ryan on Wednesday defended a bill he cosponsored in the House to permanently ban federal funding for abortion except in cases of incest and "forcible" rape. That language, which was eventually changed, would have narrowed the exception for rape victims. Akin and 225 other members of the House, including 11 Democrats, also cosponsored the bill.

Democrats have seized on the bill and accused Ryan of trying to "redefine rape and remove protections for rape victims."

"As a Republican leader in the House, Paul Ryan worked with Todd Akin to try to narrow the definition of rape and outlaw abortion even for rape victims," Obama campaign spokeswoman Lis Smith said in a statement.

Akin has refused to heed calls to step down ? including one from Romney ? and now would need a court order to leave the race. He has until Sept. 25 to do so. Aafter that point, he would have no way to remove his name from the ballot.

Ryan, a colleague of Akin's in the House, called the Missouri congressman to urge him to bow out of the Senate race. Ryan said Wednesday he doesn't have any plans to speak to him about it now that Akin is staying in.

"He's going to run his campaign and we're going to run ours," Ryan said of Akin.

The questions about abortion were overshadowing the GOP ticket's campaign events in Iowa, Virginia and North Carolina Wednesday, where Romney was trying to keep the focus on the national debt and deficit.

Romney, speaking hours after the Congressional Budget Office warned of a new recession if Washington continues its stalemate over taxes and spending cuts, criticized Obama for not doing more to solve the country's fiscal problems.

"It's bad economics," he said. "It's the wrong course for America and I believe it's immoral to pass our burdens on to the next generation."

Romney's campaign was again attacking Obama's policies on Medicare, looking minimize focus on differences between the running mates. That comes in a new TV advertisement linking Obama's divisive health care overhaul to cuts in Medicare. The ad, titled "Nothing's Free," asserts that Obama raided $716 billion from Medicare in order to pay for his health care law. It's the first ad Romney's campaign has run focusing on health care since the Supreme Court upheld Obama's federal mandate in June

Romney has promised to roll back the Medicare spending cuts approved under Obama, while Ryan kept the cuts in his budget proposals. The campaign did not say where the health care ad would run.

Romney flew Wednesday morning from Texas, where he held campaign fundraisers Tuesday, to Iowa. During remarks in a key Midwestern state, he planned to focus on the increases in the nation's debt during Obama's term.

Ryan, less than two weeks into his new role as GOP running mate, was campaigning in Virginia and North Carolina and focusing Wednesday on a tax overhaul. The GOP campaign says Obama's calls for letting George W. Bush-era tax cuts on people earning more than $200,000 a year expire at the end of the year would hurt small businesses because many file as individuals.

Obama, meanwhile, spent a second straight day criticizing GOP ticket's proposals on education, an issue that resonates with middle-class voters. The president's campaign sees education as another avenue for linking Romney to Ryan's budget, which calls for $115 billion in cuts to the Education Department.

Appearing at a school in North Las Vegas, Nev., Obama said that Republicans in Congress, "led by" Ryan, had thwarted Democratic efforts to give states money to rehire teachers laid off during the recession. The result is "tens of thousands of teachers" not entering classrooms this fall.

"Not only is that unfair to our kids, it's foolish for our future," Obama said. "My opponent in this election doesn't seem to understand this."

Nevada, a critical battleground in the fall, is one of the states hit hardest by the nation's economic slowdown. The president met with teachers at a local high school ahead of his remarks.

In a new ad released Wednesday, the Obama campaign suggests Ryan's education cuts would lead to larger class sizes. A couple featured in the ad bemoans the prospect of increased class size and says Romney "cannot relate" to their desire to have the best public education system for their children.

The ad is running in Virginia and Ohio.

IRA Minimum Distributions and Real Estate Investments | Quest IRA

In the years and decades leading up to retirement, most savers are focused on accumulating as large of a retirement nest egg as possible, and guarding those investments against loss. Even after retirement, a great deal of attention is required to preserve your capital making sure that the retirement savings lasts throughout your retired life.

But for retirement savings that are held within an IRA, there is an additional factor to take into consideration ? the rules regarding ?required minimum distributions.? In summary, once the IRA account holder reaches age 70?, he or she must begin withdrawing a certain amount out of their IRA each year, regardless of whether he or she continues to work, has other sources of income or actually needs the money from the IRA in order to support themselves.

The amount of the required minimum distribution is calculated each year, based on the age (and therefore life expectancy) of the account holder, as well as the current balance in their account. The account holder is always free to take out more than the required minimum amount, but failure to take a distribution of at least the minimum amount will trigger penalties.

The logistics of taking a required minimum distribution are generally quite simple for IRAs held with traditional custodians; if there is not sufficient cash or money market funds in the account and then the account holder simply sells some stock or shares of a mutual fund that?s likely in their account in order to get the cash.

But there can be liquidity challenges if the retiree uses a self-directed IRA structure and holds real estate within that account. If the real estate is still generating cash flow from tenants, then that cash will often be enough to meet the required distribution amounts. But as the retiree gets older (and the required minimum distribution increases), it can be difficult to meet the distributions simply based on cash flow. In these cases, the retiree may need to sell the property and invest in more liquid assets in order to meet their distribution obligations.

Note that if the retirees take possession of the real estate held within the self-directed IRA, and begin using it themselves, then the account will likely be deemed to have made a distribution equal to the market value of the property. This will significantly reduce the burden of the required minimum distribution rules, but it will almost certainly result in a significant tax hit if the self-directed IRA was set up as a traditional IRA.

On the other hand, if the self-directed IRA was structured as a Roth IRA, then the required minimum distribution rules do not apply. Because Roth IRAs (including self-directed Roth IRAs) are funded with ?after-tax? dollars, the IRS has already taken its tax bite and a retiree could take possession of real estate from their self-directed Roth IRA without having to pay taxes on the distribution.

Given the opportunities and potential advantages to be gained from a self-directed IRA, the required minimum distribution rules should not stop someone from holding real estate within that type of account. However, it is worth planning ahead to avoid running afoul of the required minimum distribution rules, or incurring any unexpected fees or taxes.

For the first time in its 80-year history, Augusta National Golf Club has female members. The home of the Masters, under increasing criticism the last decade because of its all-male membership, invited former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and South Carolina financier Darla Moore to become the first women in green jackets when the club opens for a new season in October. "This is a joyous occasion," Augusta National chairman Billy Payne said Monday, Aug. 20, 2012. The move likely ends a debate that intensified in 2002 when Martha Burk of the National Council of Women's Organizations urged the club to include women among its members. FILE - This April 4, 2007 file photo shows Billy Payne, chairman of the Augusta National Golf Club and the Masters golf tournament, addressing the media at the Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Ga. For the first time in it's 80-year history, Augusta National Golf Club has female members. The home of the Masters, under increasing criticism the last decade because of its all-male membership, invited former Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice and South Carolina financier Darla Moore to become the first women in green jackets when the club opens for a new season in October. This is a joyous occasion, Payne said Monday, Aug. 20, 2012. (AP Photo/Chris O'Meara, FIle)

(AP) ? Don't overlook the two biggest winners in Augusta National's decision to invite women to join the club.

Condoleezza Rice and Darla Moore are now members of one of the most exclusive golf clubs in the world. They will be presented green jackets when the golf course opens for a new season in October. They can attend the members-only parties, including the Jamboree each spring. Members are discouraged from playing too much at the home of the Masters, though they can bring guests and stay in the white cabins along the 10th fairway.

If their schedules allow, they will be assigned a committee during the Masters. They will be at the members-only dinner in an upstairs chalet at the end of the tournament to toast the newest Masters champion.

But they weren't the only winners.

The only thing Augusta National ever says about membership issues is that it doesn't discuss them. Nothing spoke to the historic nature of Monday's decision more than club chairman Billy Payne issuing a press release to confirm Rice and Moore as the newest members.

He called it a "joyous occasion," which could be interpreted many ways.

Perhaps the joy is knowing that he won't be fielding any more questions why Augusta National hasn't had a female member in its 80-year history. Or that the focus at the Masters can return to white dogwoods, pink azaleas and lightning fast greens.

It does seem strange that keeping up with the times ? some argue Augusta was a century behind ? by adding female members would constitute a "joyous occasion."

Even so, Augusta National comes out a winner because it still called the shots.

Former chairman Hootie Johnson said as much 10 years ago when he felt Martha Burk and her women's advocacy group were threatening the Masters because the club had no women as members.

"There may well come a day when women will be invited to join our membership, but that timetable will be ours and not at the point of a bayonet," Johnson said.

In an interview in his office later that year, Johnson distributed a historical summary of the club and the Masters, the highest-rated golf telecast in the world.

"Our society is changing, and it is only natural that our club should reflect these changes in contemporary society," Johnson wrote in the one-page summary. "We are finding more and more, our existing members' suggestions for new members have broadened to include a varied cross section of this society. We expect this trend to continue."

It seems as though Augusta was headed in this direction all along.

A person with knowledge of club operations said Rice and Moore first were considered as members five years ago. The person, who spoke on condition of anonymity because club matters are private, suspects Payne knew in April during the Masters that two women would be fitted for a green jacket by the end of the year.

The announcement was not at the point of a bayonet. It was done in typical, understated Augusta National fashion.

And it nearly left Burk speechless, but only for a moment.

"Oh my God. We won," she blurted out.

Yes, Burk can claim a victory, too.

Some might argue that trying to corner Johnson in 2002 only delayed the inevitable. But there was nothing to suggest from the public's viewpoint ? everything is so secretive at his Georgia club ? that a female member was in the works.

"This is a good turn of events," Burk said. "It came sooner than I expected. I thought they were going to try to outlast me. And I really thought they would wait until the women's movement would get no credit. But if we had not done what we did, this would not have happened now. There's a possibility it would not have happened for 20 or 30 years."

Did her protest slow progress at a club that does nothing quickly?

"I think the 'point of a bayonet' was indicative of the mindset, not only of Hootie but the steering body," Burk said. "No, I don't think it would have happened sooner. They had no intention of having a woman member."

Other winners?

PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem no longer has to cringe when the subject of Augusta National's membership is brought up. The tour has a policy not to play at golf courses that don't have women or minorities. But the PGA Tour has no control over the Masters. It was suggested to Finchem on more than one occasion that the tour no longer recognize the Masters as an official win, and not have its earnings count toward the PGA Tour money list.

Finchem finally said in May that the Masters was "too important" to ignore.

"We don't get to determining whether their policies are right or wrong, because we don't have to, because we made the conclusion that regardless of those policies, we are going to continue to play and recognize them as part of the PGA Tour," he said some of his most blunt remarks.

Finchem weighed in on Augusta's announcement Monday by commending the club.

"At a time when women represent one of the fastest growing segments in both playing and following the game of golf, this sends a positive and inclusive message for our sport," he said.

Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player were among those who applauded the decision. Perhaps their biggest cheer is not having to answer questions about it. Whatever their feelings ? and golfers are known to play it safe whenever topics turn controversial ? all they cared about at Augusta National was winning the green jacket.

It comes with a lifetime exemption to the Masters, and a spot in the Champions Locker Room upstairs in the clubhouse. And if they win the Masters in April, they will be invited to a dinner hosted by members, including two of the newest members ? Rice and Moore.

Motherhood: Take 2: That's what I'm here for....right?!

When you're an at-home Mom, I suppose it's normal to feel like there are certain things that are simply "your" job to take care of.? During the summer when the kids were home all.day.long., I didn't do much for them.? They had 1500 boxes of cereal available for breakfast, I kept tuna salad made or lunch meat (no nitrates!!!) on hand at all times so they could make sandwiches for lunch, and snack stuff was always in the fridge or cabinet awaiting their attack.? I even skimped on dinner many summer nights.

But now that they are back in school and sports are in full swing, I find it my duty to take on just about all of their duties.? I'm sure to many Moms this sounds insane. But being home every day, all day, aside from volunteering at Nas' school, exercising, and writing, I feel like the household business is mine to tend to. And I want the house to be clean when they all make their way back home for the evening.? I know my Mom worked full-time and did what she could. If she were home every day all day she would have a) gone crazy, but b) had EVERYTHING taken care of when we got home! So this whole at-home Mom thing has definitely become a "homemaker" thing because, well, there are NO KIDS home til 3:30 Monday through Friday!

So what does this look like? Well, I feel obligated to get up with my daughter in the morning at 6:15. I need to make sure she's up and getting it together for the day. Some days I'll be up for making the kids something hot for breakfast, this morning it was pancakes and bacon, yesterday it was oatmeal (instant mixed with rolled), toast and fruit. But I feel like I need to help them along in the morning, and breakfast is my gig even if it's cereal, toast and a boiled egg! I don't like the kids eating too much processed 'crap' and we all know that 'real' food requires some time and effort - so Mama's gotta get up!

For now, I make their sandwiches on Sunday, add lettuce and tomato on the day of, and they have snacks in a big bowl for them to choose from. I also make their fruit cup or a little salad for them to pack, but that is also because I need to know they are eating fairly well on any given day.? Maybe this all just comes down to control? It wouldn't be the first time I've heard that - I'm controlling, yes.

Then, I check to see what we can have for dinner before 4 p.m. rolls around so I can feed Nas before football on practice nights.? Babe insists he can help with dinner some nights, but I realize I have plenty of time to get that taken care of in case he's not up to doing dinner when he thinks he might be.

I do realize that this can be a bad idea. But I've decided that for the first couple of weeks, while they get settled into their routines, it's what my inner Mom voice tells me to do.? Then I will need to let them take on some of the responsibility because one of my top priorities is raising my kids to be independent. Jay's off to a great start in that regard, but Nas will need more encouragement - not Mommy taking on all of his "stuff".

Maybe when I see myself as CEO of our household I need to remember to delegate, as any good leader knows. I find great joy in taking care of my family, but I can't let that override my determination to raise independent kids. I'm sure as the newness of this school year wears off I will let up a bit because sharing the duties is the only way I'll get a win-win: I'm taking care of my family and ensuring that the kids gradually take on more responsibility. That's how you really take care of and love your kids.? Because if the past 11 years of motherhood have taught me anything, it's that they'll be 18 and ready to live their own lives sooner than I know. And I need them to be very ready and very capable when the time comes.

Mediterranean diet enriched with olive oil may protect bone

ScienceDaily (Aug. 15, 2012) ? A study to be published in the Endocrine Society?s Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism (JCEM) shows consumption of a Mediterranean diet enriched with olive oil for two years is associated with increased serum osteocalcin concentrations, suggesting a protective effect on bone.

Age-related bone mass loss and decreased bone strength affects women and men alike are an important determinant of osteoporosis and fracture risk. Studies have shown that the incidence of osteoporosis in Europe is lower in the Mediterranean basin. The traditional Mediterranean diet, rich in fruits and vegetables, with a high intake of olives and olive oil could be one of the environmental factors underlying this difference.

?The intake of olive oil has been related to the prevention of osteoporosis in experimental and in vitro models,? said Jos? Manuel Fern?ndez-Real, MD, PhD, of Hospital Dr. Josep Trueta in Girona, Spain and lead author of the study. ?This is the first randomized study which demonstrates that olive oil preserves bone, at least as inferred by circulating bone markers, in humans.?

The participants in this study were 127 community-dwelling men aged 55 to 80 years randomly selected from one of the Prevencion con Dieta Mediterranea (PREDIMED) study centers who had at least two years of follow-up. The PREDIMED study is a large, parallel group, randomized, controlled trial aimed to assess the effect of the Mediterranean diet on the prevention of cardiovascular diseases.

For this study, subjects were elderly without prior cardiovascular disease but having a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes or harboring at least three cardiovascular risk factors, namely hypertension, dyslipidemia, or a family history of premature cardiovascular disease. Participants were randomly assigned to three intervention groups: Mediterranean diet with mixed nuts, Mediterranean diet with virgin olive oil, and a low-fat diet.

Biochemical measurements of osteocalcin, glucose, total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol and triglycerides were performed at baseline and after two year follow-up on fasting blood samples. Researchers found that only consumption of the Mediterranean diet with olive oil was associated with a significant increase in the concentrations of total osteocalcin and other bone formation markers. There were also no significant changes in serum calcium in subjects taking olive oil whereas serum calcium decreased significantly in the other two groups.

?It?s important to note that circulating osteocalcin was associated with preserved insulin secretion in subjects taking olive oil,? added Fern?ndez-Real. ?Osteocalcin has also been described to increase insulin secretion in experimental models.?

Other researchers who helped with the study included M?nica Bull?, Jos? Maria Moreno-Navarrete, Wifredo Ricart, Emilio Ros, Ramon Estruch, and Jordi Salas-Salvad? of Instituto de Salud Carlos III in Madrid, Spain.

The article, ?A Mediterranean Diet Enriched with Olive Oil is Associated with Higher Serum Total Osteocalcin Levels in Elderly Men at High Cardiovascular Risk,? will appear in the October 2012 issue of JCEM.

Analyst rates CVS, Walgreen shares 'Buy'

Walgreen Co. and CVS Caremark Corp. are both poised to improve their earnings performance heading into second half of 2012 and next year, according to a Cantor Fitzgerald analyst who started coverage of the stocks with "Buy" ratings.

THE OPINION: Walgreen, the largest U.S. drugstore chain, will be helped by the recovery of some business it lost due to a recently concluded contract dispute with pharmacy benefits manager Express Scripts Holding Co., analyst Ajay Jain said in a Wednesday research note.

Walgreen used to fill prescriptions for St. Louis-based Express Scripts, which runs drug plans for employers, insurers and other customers as the nation's largest pharmacy benefits manager, or PBM. The companies let a contract between them expire at the end of last year, but they said last month they will resume doing business in September.

Walgreen, based in Deerfield, Ill., also will be helped by the impact of acquisitions and generic drugs, which help pharmacy profitability because they provide a wider margin between the cost for the pharmacy to purchase the drugs and the reimbursement received.

CVS Caremark, based in Woonsocket, R.I., is the second largest drugstore chain, and it also operates one of the largest PBMs. Jain said in a separate note operating income is set to improve around 15 percent this year for both of those segments.

"After several transition years, we look for continued earnings improvement in both CVS' retail and (PBM) operations in 2012," he said.

The analyst set a target of $43 for Walgreen and $55 for CVS Caremark.

THE STOCKS: Walgreen shares climbed 16 cents to $35.60 in Wednesday afternoon trading, while CVS shares rose 12 cents to $44.24. Broader trading indexes were mixed.

Google officially announces Motorola downsizing, will take a $275 million charge in Q3

Motorola

Google this evening confirmed in an SEC filing that it plans to cut some 4,000 employees from the recent acquisition of Motorola -- about a fifth of the company's workforce. And it's going to cost Google some cash to do so -- to the tune of $275 million, and Google expects most of that charge to be taken in the third quarter. Google says it plans to close some 30 facilities as well, and "simplify its mobile product portfolio, shifting the emphasis from feature phones to more innovative and profitable devices."

The New York Times first reported the planned downsizing on Monday.

Shedding 4,000 bodies and 30 buildings won't immediately turn things around, though. Google correctly notes that Motorola has lost money 14 out of the last 16 quarters -- that's all but six months in the last four years -- and that while these cuts are a "key step" on the road to profitability, "investors should expect to see significant revenue variability ... for several quarters."

This affects real people, of course. Google says "generous" severance packages will be provided, as well as job placement services. Regardless, that's still 20 percent of Motorola work force that's about to be out of work. But if there's a company willing to treat layoffs with a little dignity, we're willing to bet it's Google.
