Acer Aspire Timeline Ultra M5-481TG-6814

Ultrabooks are mostly about trade-offs. You typically need to ditch a few niceties in order to cram everything into such a small package, so components like optical drives and capacious spinning hard drives tend to fall by the wayside. Not so with the Acer Aspire Timeline Ultra M5-481TG-6814. It packs an impressive array of features into a svelte, attractive chassis and is an exceptionally nimble performer at most tasks. Factor in a price tag below that of other systems in its class, and the Aspire M5 is an easy choice for those who are looking for a powerful ultrabook but don't want to burn holes in their pockets.

Design and Features

The Aspire M5 measures 0.79 by 14.43 by 10.05 inches (HWD), and at 4.16 pounds it's on the heavy side for an ultrabook, although its slim profile reduces any unnecessary bulk. That said, it does weigh more than other systems in its class, including the 4.08-pound Dell Inspiron 14z (Summer 2012) . The Aspire M5's chassis is decked out primarily in a handsome brushed-aluminum finish, but the black plastic underside feels somewhat cheap by comparison and detracts from the overall polished aesthetic. Fortunately, the Aspire M5 compensates for these shortcomings by packing features not typically seen on ultrabooks, like a built-in tray-loading DVD burner; aside from the Inspiron 14z, systems with an optical drive in this category are few and far between.

The 14-inch display has a maximum resolution of 1,366 by 768, which, though not as crisp as the Editors' Choice?winning Asus Zenbook Prime UX32VD-DB71 , is good enough for 720p video. But its attractively bright and glossy finish is marred by Acer's decision to inexplicably allocate only 14 inches of viewing area on the 14.6-inch screen, resulting in a distracting black bar around the display's edges. To Acer's credit, the display is advertised as 14 inches, so this doesn't come as a total surprise, but it's difficult to think of a reason why Acer wouldn't opt to simply cover this black portion with a slightly larger bezel.

The top row of the Aspire M5's chiclet-style backlit keyboard features shortcuts for toggling Wi-Fi, switching between displays, controlling system volume, disabling the touchpad, and turning off the display; the right side of the keyboard sports media playback buttons. Typing is a breeze, and we noticed no flexing during testing. The palm rest is generously sized and offers plenty of hand real estate, although your thumb may occasionally brush the touchpad. The touchpad itself is responsive, and provides a good amount of tactile feedback for two-finger scrolling and pinch-zooming. The left- and right-click buttons are integrated into the touchpad, not separate buttons; this looks nice, but it resulted in my clicking the wrong button on more than one occasion.

The Aspire M5's built-in speakers are fairly loud, and though the bass is somewhat flat, movies and music alike can easily be heard in small- to medium-size rooms. Of course, you won't be shaking the floor, but by the standard of ultrabooks the Aspire M5 pumps out decent volume levels.

Aside from the optical drive on the system's left side and the multiformat card reader (SDHC/SDXC/SD/MMC) and headphone jack on the right side, most of the action on the Aspire M5 can be found at the rear of the system. There, you'll find two USB 3.0 ports, an Ethernet port, and a full-size HDMI port. The last is particularly useful, letting you hook up the system to a larger display without having to faff about with any dongles. You will, however, have to use an HDMI cord: Unlike the Zenbook Prime UX32VD-DB71, Lenovo IdeaPad U310 , and HP Envy 4-1043cl , the Aspire M5 does not feature Intel Wireless Display (WiDi) technology, so wirelessly beaming audio and video to a larger screen isn't an option.

A 500GB 5,400rpm hard drive and a 20GB flash cache in the Aspire M5 provide both decent storage capacity and a speedy boot time. The 20GB solid-state-drive (SSD) is invisible to the user, working in the background during repetitive tasks and when you wake the system from sleep mode. The 500GB hard drive has plenty of room for storing data, though it comes loaded with a decent amount of preloaded software. As is often the case, the programs range from useful (Microsoft Office Starter 2010) to total bloatware (the Bing Bar and desktop links to Netflix, eBay, and Skype), with a few sprinkles of proprietary software (Acer ePower, Backup Manager, USB Charge Manager, and the like) and trial versions (30-day trials of Norton Online Backup and NTI Media Maker 9). That said, the slew of included software is forgivable because it ultimately contributes to the Aspire M5's affordable price tag.

Performance
Acer Aspire Timeline Ultra M5-481TG-6814

The Aspire M5 outshined others in its class nearly across the board. This doesn't come as a major surprise considering its potent CPU/GPU combination. In addition to its third-generation 1.7GHz Intel Core i5-3317U processor, the Aspire M5 comes equipped with both integrated Intel HD Graphics 4000 and discrete 1GB Nvidia GeForce GT640MLE graphics processors; the system switches between the two GPUs depending on available power, although the user has the option of manually tailoring the configuration down to specific programs. At any rate, the Aspire M5's Futuremark PCMark 7 score of 2,985 bettered the Zenbook Prime UX32VD-DB71 (2,523) but not the IdeaPad U310 (3,570) and, to a greater extent, the HP Envy 4-1043cl (3,962). As far as 3D rendering is concerned, the Aspire M5 screamed past the competition. Its impressive 3DMark06 scores (10,294 at medium detail settings and 1,024-by-768 resolution; 8,501 at native resolution with 4x anti-aliasing) left the Zenbook Prime UX32VD-DB71 in distant second place (8,627 at medium detail settings and 1,024-by-768 resolution; 5,148 at native resolution with 4x anti-aliasing).

The Aspire M5 pumped out equally impressive results in the gaming arena and barely broke a sweat while crossing the playability threshold of 30 frames per second (fps). Ultimately, few other systems did as well as the Aspire M5 in both Crysis (55fps in medium quality at 1,024-by-768 resolution; 25fps in high quality at native resolution) and Lost Planet 2 (50fps in medium quality at 1,024-by-768 resolution; 31fps in high quality at native resolution). The sole exception is the Zenbook Prime UX32VD-DB71, thanks to its discrete 1GB Nvidia GeForce GT 620M GPU (52fps in medium quality at 1,024-by-768 resolution and 6fps in high quality at native resolution for Crysis; 34fps in medium quality at 1,024-by-768 resolution and 10fps in high quality at native resolution for Lost Planet 2). No other system even came close to the Aspire M5.

Acer Aspire Timeline Ultra M5-481TG-6814

The Aspire M5 wasn't as sure-footed in our multimedia tests. It completed our Handbrake video-encoding test in 1 minute 59 seconds, tying with the HP Envy 4-1043cl and outperforming the IdeaPadU310 (2 minutes 3 seconds), but falling short of the Zenbook Prime UX32VD-DB71 (1 minute 43 seconds). Its CineBench R11.5 score of 2.10 sputtered behind its entire class, and lagged behind the third-place-finishing HP Envy 4-1043cl (2.38). Conversely, the Aspire M5 completed our Photoshop CS5 test in a brisk 3 minutes 7 seconds, or 51 seconds quicker than the second-place Zenbook Prime UX32VD-DB71 (3 minutes 58 seconds). The Aspire M5's 54Wh battery lasted 7 hours 54 minutes in MobileMark 2007, longer than the rest of its class. Although the next-best system, the HP Envy 4-1043cl (7 hours 45 minutes) came very close, the others exhibited significantly shorter battery life. Still, this excellent result does little to mitigate the fact that the Aspire M5's battery is sealed into its chassis, so swapping it out can be something of a warranty-voiding, MacGyver-esque endeavor.

No, the Acer Aspire Timeline Ultra M5-481TG-6814 isn't perfect. Yes, it's loaded with bloatware, is somewhat heavy, and has a distracting black bar around its display's viewable area. But these missteps are outweighed by its nimble performance in both everyday computing applications and gaming. It's also an excellent value, costing less than the very systems it handily outperforms. It may not pack the sizzle of our current Editors' Choice ultrabook, the Asus Zenbook Prime UX32VD-DB71, but the Aspire M5 is nonetheless an easy choice for anyone looking to buy a powerful ultrabook but not burn holes in their pockets.

Oakland Raiders coach Dennis Allen expresses "surprise" at Steve Wisniewski's resignation

NAPA -- Raiders coach Dennis Allen said he expected assistant line coach Steve Wisniewski to be part of the staff and that his resignation came too late to bring in a replacement.

Wisniewski resigned for ``personal reasons'' -- a decision that tackle Khalif Barnes said he learned of through text message two weeks earlier. Allen didn't say when he was informed, but said the late notice led to making Frank Pollack the lone offensive line coach.

"It was a little bit of a surprise,'' Allen told reporters Sunday. ``Obviously he has his personal reasons as to why he made that decision. I will say this, it was totally his decision. It was nobody else's decision.''

Pollack, who was the assistant line coach in Houston last season where Raiders offensive coordinator Greg Knapp was quarterbacks coach, will be primarily responsible for returning the club to the zone blocking system it used exclusively under Tom Cable from 2007 through 2009.

When Hue Jackson arrived as offensive coordinator, replacing Knapp, in 2010, Oakland integrated zone blocking with gap and power blocking.

``We thought about whether to bring in somebody or not and we just felt like at this point, the right thing to do was stick with the coaches we had and go forward,'' Allen said. ``I've got every confidence in the world in Frank Pollack as an offensive line coach.''

Twitter feeds fuel Jackson family feud

LOS ANGELES -- From behind the highly secretive Jackson dynasty's once-impenetrable wall, Prince and Paris Jackson appeared to be airing their family's dirty laundry this week in a typical way for a teen -- on their Twitter feeds.

Their tweets about the alleged disappearance of their grandmother, matriarch Katherine Jackson, were emotionally charged and prolific. One of Prince's posts thanking fans for their support ran far past 120 characters on TwitLonger. It's an unprecedented celebrity family squabble playing out in the digital town square.

This comes in the same week that Greek triple jumper Paraskevi Papachristou was banned from competing in the Olympics after she sent out a Tweet perceived to be racist. On Thursday, Florida State football coach Jimbo Fisher banned his players from using Twitter for the rest of the year after one of his players posted rap lyrics about killing police officers. And in the wake of Kristen Stewart's apology for her "momentary indiscretion" with married "Snow White and the Huntsman" director Rupert Sanders, "Twilight" fans have taken to Twitter to express their anger toward Stewart and their support for her longtime boyfriend and co-star, Robert Pattinson.

Twitter has ingratiated itself as a daily media fixture delivering cultural and news tidbits to an information-ravenous public, but it's increasingly finding itself in the spotlight as well. The quick-moving, instantaneous forum is often a double-edged sword for celebrities, who can bypass the tabloids and reach the masses with one uncensored click; but quick-fingered, loose-lipped tweets can do instant damage.

More frequently, celebrity Twitter feeds are being managed by wary flacks with an eye toward reining in their clients and avoiding potential missteps. The trend may be counterintuitive to the immediate, unfettered nature of Twitter, but some say it's a necessary evil.

"The great news about Twitter is celebs can talk instantaneously and directly to their fans; the bad news is, celebs can talk instantaneously and directly to their fans," says Howard Bragman, a longtime publicist and vice chairman of Reputation.com who's represented Chaz Bono and Stevie Wonder, among many others. "It's absolutely an increasing concern for us; every week we see something tweeted that's taken right down."

There's always been speculation as to whether celebrity tweets are really their own, or whether more PR-savvy handlers are tweeting for them toward some strategic promotional end. After all, 14-year-old Paris Jackson alone has more than 700,000 followers. Bragman estimates that about 80 percent of celebrities tweet for themselves these days, though as the medium becomes more of a central nerve for taste making, he says that number might be on the decline.

"Ruby Sparks" review: when cute becomes cutesy

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - To be fair, "Ruby Sparks" is probably the best amalgam of "Annie Hall," "Weird Science," "The Bride of Frankenstein," "Stranger than Fiction" and "Xanadu" that anyone's ever going to make.

But the fact that I could so easily come up with that list of titles while watching the movie - when I would rather have been watching any of the films on that list - doesn't speak all that well for this second effort from "Little Miss Sunshine" directors Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris.

There would be interesting connections to be made regarding the fact that Zoe Kazan both wrote the script and stars in the title role as a woman who is literally a writer's creation if Kazan's own literary efforts had anything new to say about how men try to control women, or how quirks that initially seem endearing become thoroughly annoying, or how artists depict the world as they'd like to see it rather than how it really is.

Instead, "Ruby Sparks" assaults the audience with such an unending charm offensive that what initially seems cute becomes cutesy, and what feels quirky descends into twee.

Blocked author Calvin (Paul Dano) hasn't produced a major piece of writing since a decade ago when, as a 19-year-old high-school dropout, he wrote a culture-shaping, best-selling novel. Now he stares at his electric Olympia typewriter - yes, this is one of those characters in one of tho-e movies ? unable to imprint upon the blank page. The only people Calvin connects to in the outside world are his gregarious brother Harry (Chris Messina) and his therapist Dr. Rosenthal (Elliott Gould).

It's Dr. Rosenthal who assigns Calvin to write a page, no matter how terrible, and Calvin finds inspiration in his dreams to write about his ideal woman, Ruby (Kazan). And then one morning she's standing in his kitchen eating breakfast. Calvin thinks he's losing his mind, but then he realizes that other people can see her.

Everything's great at first, but eventually Ruby chafes under Calvin's doting attention and the fact that he doesn't have friends. When she starts making a move toward leaving the relationship, will her creator resist the temptation to pull his manuscript out of the drawer and to start editing Ruby to be more pliable, easier to manipulate, more the woman Calvin thinks he wants but can't control once he has her?

"Ruby Sparks" certainly touches on some potentially fascinating concepts, but it never delivers on any of its notions. Worse, the film doesn't trust the audience to understand the implications beneath its fantasy surface - there's a completely unnecessary scene in which Calvin's ex (Deborah Ann Woll) turns up to catalog his faults, as though we hadn't already figured those out for ourselves by watching how he treats (and revises) Ruby.

And while Ruby herself takes the expression "Manic Pixie Dream Girl" to new levels of literalness, Kazan doesn't make this creation as appealing as a more seasoned actress might.

She and Dano have been interesting to watch in other movies, but this time out, he's such a hipster downer (all the way to his gray cardigans) and she's so artificially twinkly that I didn't particularly care what happened to either of them, together or apart.

There are some memorable turns by Messina and Annette Bening (as Calvin and Harry's earth-mother mom) and Antonio Banderas (as mom's artist boyfriend), and cinematographer Matthew Libatique ("Black Swan," "Iron Man") gives Los Angeles a breezy sheen as Calvin and Ruby hit any number of movie-nerd hotspots, including the Egyptian Theater, the Hammer Museum and the outdoor screenings at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery.

Like a lot of young-adult relationships, "Ruby Sparks" feels charming at first, becomes less interesting as it goes along, and winds up barely memorable by the end. Consider saving yourself the heartache and postponing your date until you can meet on your Netflix queue in about six months.

How to Build Muscle - Nussuirc Health Review

How to Build Muscle: Train Well and Avoid the Negatives

muscle buildingContrary to popular belief, building the muscle mass of your body is more than just pumping a whole lot of iron. You need to be able to train your body in the right manner to get the desired result when it comes to shaping your body. More often than not you may find this a cumbersome exercise but if you were to follow certain routines properly then you would be more than simply satisfied with the outcome. Yet if you want to know how to build muscle, you must be prepared to face the flipside of things. The following are 3 elements, which you should be concerned about before pumping iron when it comes to body and muscle building.

Exercise

This is an obvious routine to follow when you are working towards building muscle mass. However, there is more to the exercise routine than just hitting the gym. Before talking to your trainer about how to build muscle, you must try to get a cardio exercise routine decided upon that you will need to follow religiously. This will help you build your stamina levels and also help in reducing the extra fat in your body.

Diet

This is without saying an important part of your routine training, which determines how to build muscle. You must concentrate on protein rich food. Look to reduce quantity in every meal and instead have smaller protein rich meals more frequently. You can also use protein diet supplements to improve on your protein intake.

Train

Training your body is quite different to exercising. Moreover, it isn?t just pumping iron either. You must build on sheer body strength and concentrate on whole body sufficiently rather than your favorite parts. This will help you regulate body muscle mass to all parts of the body in equal proportions.

Then again there are some fundamental problems of overtraining which are mentioned below.

Muscle Injuries

This is a very common outcome of excessive working out. Muscle wear and tear is a normal process in human existence. In fact it is this wear and tear that leads to old age and other problems in later life. Non directional and unscientific working out will at any point cause one to succumb to muscle injuries which will make the point of them working out rather useless. The point is that if one must train, they must establish their limits and avoid injuries by staying within them.

Burnout

Excess working out would mean a lot of physical tire if not anything else in the presence of a tough fitness regimen. Hence the most obvious recourse is to actually space out the workout schedule to whatever extent possible so as to mitigate any chance of workout with a well planned routine. Taking a trainer?s advice is perhaps the most important factor here.

Body Shape

An unplanned workout takes plans for a proper body shape and literally mutilates them. A trainer is able to specifically prescribe exercises that will tone the body as per needs. Working to the contrary may prove to be a mistake.

If you want to build your muscle then visit Athleanx.com and check their workout program.

Do We Need To Write and Publish So Much Theory? - Tenured ...

In addition to novels, I always bring a stack of scholarly books on our annual summer vacation. I bring books in my field, books not in my field, books in fields I might be ready to explore, books I might like to teach and books that I read so that I will be a better blogger.

I also bring books on vacation that are too long, or too complex, for me to be able to read in a sustained way when life is full of distraction and interruption. Sustained reading means finishing a difficult or lengthy book in a reasonable number of sittings ? between one and three, or few enough to allow me to hold the parts of the argument in my head as I move toward the end.

It is in this spirit that I reached for a recently published book of theory ? in my field, I was thinking of teaching it ? and was disappointed within the first ten pages. ?I?m not sure that it was?fair for me to be disappointed, but I was. ?It?s hard to be specific about the nature of my distress without identifying the book, but suffice to say it is about a lively contemporary political phenomenon. It purports to engage a set of vivid characters and cultural texts and?..

?.I found it so densely theorized, with such an elaborate internal structure and so many run-on sentences, as to be virtually unreadable. In fact, the commitment to theory seemed greater than the commitment to the subject. ?The book seems, in other words, to be about itself rather than about the topic(s) it promised me on the cover and in the title. Basic rules of grammar and argumentation within the paragraphs and chapters appeared to have been checked at the door. As yet (yes, I am still reading it) there is no narrative account of the phenomena it claims to engage, nor are there adequate descriptions of the events and people who are being examined.

Why do so many scholars who genuinely care about making an impact on their world privilege what purports to be the creation of theory? Particularly ?it is actually applied theory masquerading as a ?critical intervention,? written in a way that only specialists in the field have a chance of decoding? (Variants on the word ?critical? are used so frequently in contemporary theory that it is often difficult to understand how the word is being used, or whether, like the Buddhist prayer flags hung by college students , it is simply meant to signal an atmosphere.)

Some of you might say, ?Hey, this isn?t a problem with theory ? this person is just a bad writer.? ?Perhaps, but I cannot say that this author is any worse than a great many other people writing and publishing theory today. One of the few things that is completely legible within the book is this author?s commitment to a polemical style and a set of keywords that don?t necessarily make for clear argumentation but do let you know what intellectual tradition s/he hopes to be associated with.

To put my critical intervention (with which I hope to critically intervene) into context, let me say that I am neither?neither for or against the writing of theory, nor am I against the appearance of theory in scholarly books that have other rhetorical and methodological commitments.?If I have leanings in any direction they are favorable to theory: I know that writing it is not one of my strengths, nor have I ever really been inclined to do so for more than a moment or two. I do read a lot of theory ? you can?t be in my fields and not read theory even if you are a boring old historian ? and my own work has benefitted enormously from doing so.

This is why I continue my struggle with the book that dismays me. I wonder, however, why so many people feel that they have to write theory, why ? if they must write theory ? they must elaborate the same ?critical intervention? for hundreds of pages when one hundred would do, and why so many publishers feel the need to publish theory that improves in such infinitesimal ways on prior scholarship. I also wonder why more editors don?t say to authors, ?Hey: you have a great topic that is relevant and interesting to lots of people. Your book is currently hiding under a rhetorical duvet, and I?m not going to publish it until you bury the theory and write this book in an engaged and readable way.?

In fact, I would argue in relation to the book that prompted this post, the text was not even easily accessible by a specialist in the field, which I am. ?I find unreadability to be a particularly curious aspect of contemporary academic publishing. ? The vast majority of theorists whose work I follow have quite serious political, usually left, commitments. They tend to be preoccupied with social justice, the possibilities for a progressive society and the potential for radical change. These commitments not infrequently lead to institutional and individual participation in community partnerships and activisms, and the documentation of subcultural intellectual and artistic phenomena.

Despite the seriousness with which these commitments are conceived and pursued, too much published work continues to be written for an inside crowd, and can be extraordinarily difficult for even a skilled academic, much less a merely educated reader, to decode. ?Sentences go on, clause after clause, for the length of a normal paragraph, and the urgency of the issues at hand is lost in the endless obfuscations, text doubling back on itself, and extended references to other, often more obscure, theory.

Perhaps we also need to think about how we package theory. With some exceptions, the most influential contemporary theoreticians seem to write articles and short books that galvanize others into action. They are often suggestive, rather than prescriptive; encouraging rather than fiercely polemical. They avoid exegesis and instead supply concise interventions that are then illustrated through narrative and story telling. They attend to basic rhetorical rules like the topic sentence, and they take pains to make their vocabulary available to the reader in the form of keywords. Instead of constantly insisting on the importance of their theoretical intervention, they show how it works and why it matters, attending to the contemporary significance of the argument in its parts and in its entirety.

I have purposely avoided naming names in this post and would prefer that commenters do the same: but let?s begin the conversation, and readers are invited to link to other material that addresses this question. ?I ask you: Do we need to write and publish so much theory?

Your stress level can be directly proportional to the amount of debt that you have. Stress can significantly reduce your quality of life. This level of stress can only grow worse as the debts pile up, especially if you have outstanding loans from more than one source. If you?re starting to drown in your debt, it might be time to consider applying for a debt consolidation loan.

A debt consolidation effectively combines all of your preexisting, outstanding debts into one manageable loan. It?s the same debt, just bundled into one payment instead of many, making it significantly easier to handle one payment instead of the several you might currently be keeping track of.

This is welcome news to anyone who has debts from multiple sources (as previously mentioned above) because it removes the necessity of keeping up on due dates and payments. With more due dates comes the higher chance of one being missed in the process of taking care of another. And when more due dates stack up between paychecks, it becomes increasingly more difficult to make your money last.

The tricky things about a debt consolidation loan is just that: it?s still a loan. You?re not getting yourself out of debt, you?re just putting all your debts into one big pot. That being said, don?t get stuck thinking a debt consolidation loan is going to solve you problems with debt.

It?s a great way to help you regain your monetary balance. Juggling loans and payments generally leads to a poor credit score, especially as payments are missed and slip through the cracks. Your credit score represents how well you handle credit, and a poor credit score makes it difficult to finance big-ticket financial ventures down the road.

It?s still a better idea to try to manage your debts yourself if you can. You should only consider using a debt consolidation loan if you?ve exhausted the rest of your options. Instances of possible bankruptcy and foreclosure are a good time to consider debt consolidation. Outside of those two, you should do your best to find another route.

This is why. When your lender buys out your debt, they have to offer you the new consolidated loan at a higher interest rate in most cases. This is how they keep themselves in business. The interest rate, however, will depend on your credit rating just as it would in any other case.

If you choose to apply for a debt consolidation loan, treat it like the clean slate that it is. Don?t fall back into the same cycle of debt that got you into the hole you?re trying to climb out of.

Metastasized Software And Life 3.0

shark"Center for Digital Archaeology," said the banner above one of the startups at the Funders and Founders Life 3.0 demo show, and for a moment I got excited, thinking of Vernor Vinge's software archaeologists. It wasn't quite that. Instead, Codifi was a "solution for turning cultural heritage datasets and rich media into web- and mobile-ready interactive experiences." Which is cool, and worthwhile, but more a niche market than a world-shaker. As were a lot of the startups there. TennisRound: "find a tennis partner." DreamBoard: an app for dream tracking and analysis Plus, of course, the usual panoply of social marketplaces, socialsourced services, gamified giving, "Instagram for Products," etc etc yadda yadda. I apologize for being jaded. But Michael Church's scathing essay "Don't waste your time in crappy startup jobs"--go read it--was still ringing in my ears, and I couldn't help but wonder how many of these startups were founded more for the sake of founding a startup than because the founders had an idea that wouldn't let them go.

TV in Bose's $5,000 system resembles $750 Samsung LCD

5 hrs.

Bose, the consumer electronics company known for loudspeakers, headphones and home entertainment systems, on?Thursday announced its second-generation combo HDTV and sound system, the VideoWave II. Shipping now, the system is available in a 46-inch and 55-inch screen sizes. But further research reveals that the included TV most closely?resembles a far cheaper Samsung set?? and that Samsung itself made the sets for Bose.

The Bose VideoWave II consists of a?120Hz LED LCD backlit monitor (meaning it has no integrated?over-the-air TV tuner). It has six woofers and a seven-element speaker array. The screen is connected to the ?console? which provides audio amplifiers and inputs (four HDMI, two component video inputs, one?composite video and two USB ports) and switching.

Having the speakers built-in to the TV screen creates a deeper cabinet than found in other high definition TVs: The 46-inch model measures a husky?6?inches deep, while the 55-inch is 5.5?inches.?

The price? The 46-inch sells for $4,999 and the 55-inch is $5,999. For the given screen size, these Bose TVs are the most expensive flat-panel consumer TVs available.

But the thing is, as Bose sources confirm, the monitors are built to Bose's?specifications by Samsung. And while the VideoWave II system?includes more than just a display ? and certainly a Bose sound system is worth some kind of premium ? the smaller of the?TV sets is comparable to a?Samsung set that starts at around?$750. And the image-enhancing?features that are readily available in $1,000-and-up TVs from other manufacturers are not available on the new?Bose models.

Both sizes of?Bose monitor use direct-lit LED backlights, meaning the LEDs are placed directly behind the LCD screen, according to a?Bose customer-service?representative with whom we discussed the specs. However,?unlike the highly regarded Sony XBR55HX929 or the Sharp?Elite HDTV, there is no local LED dimming to deepen the black levels. The Bose VideoWave II monitor also?doesn?t include a scanning backlight, which would?improve motion resolution ? another feature found on?most LED-backlit HDTVs. It?also lacks an HDTV (rec.?709) color setting found on almost all top models, which provides accurate color for Blu-ray discs and high-def broadcasts.

You won't find?popular perks such as 3-D viewing?and "smart TV" Internet streaming on the Bose models either.

Comparing TVs alone, the?Samsung model that closest resembles the Bose 46-inch monitor is the?UN46EH6000, a 120Hz LED backlit HDTV. It sells for under $740, measures a depth of 3.7?inches, and has features ? such as the scanning?backlight and?integrated over-the-air?tuner ? that the Bose lacks.?

That leaves $4,260 left over from the $4,999 price tag, with which one could buy?a heck of a sound system. The Yamaha YSP-2200, a good audio?comparison, delivers 132-watt surround sound in an 18-element speaker array ??for $799.

UN blames regime forces for Syria massacre

This citizen journalism image made from video provided by Shaam News Network SNN, purports to show a man mourning a victim killed by violence that, according to anti-regime activists, was carried out by government forces in Tremseh, Syria about 15 kilometers (nine miles) northwest of the central city of Hama, Thursday, July 12, 2012. BEIRUT (AP) ? The U.N. singled out government forces Friday for blame in the latest massacre in Syria, a frenzy of killing that raises new questions about whether diplomacy has any chance to end the crisis more than 16 months into the bloodiest revolt of the Arab Spring.

As the violence turns ever more chaotic, analysts warn the effort by special envoy Kofi Annan has become nothing more than a pretense, with government forces, rebels, jihadists and others fighting for power.

"Violence and escalation have outpaced political and international diplomacy," said Fawaz A. Gerges, director of the Middle East Center at the London School of Economics.

"I don't see a light at the end of the tunnel. ... All I see is more violence and more escalation, and this horrible massacre is another sign that Syria is spiraling out of control."

Scores of people were killed Thursday when Syrian gunners bombarded the impoverished village of Tremseh with tanks and helicopters in what rebels claim was among the worst single days of bloodshed in the uprising against President Bashar Assad.

The accounts of the killings and death tolls varied widely. Late Friday, local activists backed away from early reports that more than 200 people were killed. One said he had confirmed 74, but had only 20 names. Another provided a list of 103 names.

For its part, the Syrian government said more than 50 people were killed when Syrian forces clashed with "armed gangs" that were terrorizing village residents. The regime refers to its opponents as terrorists and gangsters.

Much remains unclear about what happened in Tremseh, an isolated hamlet in Hama province, including why it was targeted and whether all of the dead were civilians. One activist group said dozens of victims were rebel fighters.

An amateur video posted online showed a young man wailing over the body of an elderly, gray-haired man wrapped in a blanket.

"Come on, Dad. For the sake of God, get up," the man sobbed as a boom was heard in the background.

Another video showed a mass grave that was three bodies wide and about 10 bodies long. The video's narrator called it "the first group of martyrs from the Tremseh massacre."

Neither activists' claims nor the videos could be independently verified.

The killings fueled debate about what to try next to stop the violence, which activists say has killed more than 17,000 people despite several rounds of sanctions and increasingly frantic condemnation by the U.N., the U.S. and its Western and Arab allies.

Reflecting the deep frustration, activists held anti-regime protests across Syria on Friday under the banner "Remove Kofi Annan, the servant of Assad and Iran."

"Down with Annan, the agent of Iran!" protesters chanted in the town of Maaret al-Numan. Iran is one of the Syrian regime's strongest backers.

In a statement Friday, Annan said he was "shocked and appalled" by the reports of the attack on Tremseh, and condemned the government for using heavy weaponry in populated areas, something it was supposed to have stopped three months ago.

Maj. Gen. Robert Mood, head of the U.N. monitoring mission, told reporters in Damascus that a group of observers deployed about three miles (five kilometers) from Tremseh confirmed the use of heavy weaponry and attack helicopters, implicating the government.

The violence has grown increasingly chaotic over the course of the uprising, which began in March 2011 with mostly peaceful protests. Government forces launched a ferocious crackdown on the demonstrations, leading many people to take up arms.

Besides the government crackdown, rebel fighters are launching increasingly deadly attacks on regime targets, and several massive suicide attacks this year suggest al-Qaida or other extremists are joining the fray.

Against this backdrop, diplomacy appears all but doomed to fail.

The government and the opposition ? which is fractious and largely leaderless ? have agreed in theory to Annan's plan, which calls for a cease-fire by both sides and for the government to pull its tanks out of population centers.

But both sides have largely ignored their promises to Annan, and the presence of other forces, such as violent extremists who are not party to any such agreement, only complicates efforts to stop the bloodshed.

Threats at the U.N. Security Council have no heft because veto-wielding member Russia stands staunchly on the side of the regime in Syria, its longtime ally.

On Friday, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton expressed outrage over the killings in Tremseh and demanded that the Security Council take action to stop the violence.

"History will judge this council," she said. "Its members must ask themselves whether continuing to allow the Assad regime to commit unspeakable violence against its own people is the legacy they want to leave."

Russia, for its part, condemned the Tremseh killings, but blamed them on "terrorists" opposed to Assad.

The Syrian government claims the uprising is a foreign plot to weaken Syria, casting all its opponents ? from pro-democracy demonstrators to armed rebels ? as terrorists.

NATO and the U.N. have all but ruled out foreign military intervention. Syria is intertwined in alliances with Iran, Hezbollah and Palestinian militant groups, and borders Israel ? making the fallout from military action unpredictable.

"The Western powers have no appetite or political will to intervene militarily," Gerges said. "So once they say there is no more diplomatic initiative, then they have to say 'What is Plan B?' There is no Plan B."

There is virtually no way to perform an independent investigation in Syria, one of the most authoritarian states in the Middle East. Assad has largely sealed off the country and prevented reporters from moving freely. A team of 300 U.N. monitors sent to Syria to provide an unbiased look at the violence has been confined to their hotels since June 15 because of the worsening violence.

In Istanbul, the head of the Syrian National Council, an exile opposition group, called on the Security Council to meet urgently to discuss ways to protect the Syrian people, saying the latest killings raise doubts about Annan's plan.

"Kofi Annan is very much drifting away from the mission that he was entrusted with, which will make us reconsider everything he proposes," Abdelbaset Sieda told reporters.

Two activists reached Friday via Skype said they were in villages near Tremseh and gave a chilling account of the violence.

Bassel Darwish said the army surrounded the village early Thursday to prevent people from fleeing and pounded it with artillery, tank shells and missiles from a combat helicopter.

"Lots of people tried to get the families out but they weren't able to," he said. After the shelling, the army entered with pro-government thugs, who gunned down and stabbed residents in the streets, he said.

Initially, Darwish said activists had determined 200 people died. However, later via Skype, he sent a list of 103 names of people he said were confirmed dead.

Another activist, Abu Ghazi al-Hamwi, said local rebels tried to fight off the army but couldn't.

"They kept shelling the city and the weapons that the (rebel) Free Army had were not enough to keep them out," he said, adding that he had been able to confirm 74 dead.
