InBev to buy out Modelo for $20.1 billion

BRUSSELS (AP) ? Anheuser-Busch InBev SA agreed Friday to buy the half of Corona maker Grupo Modelo it doesn't already own for $20.1 billion in cash, in a deal that will greatly increase the size and dominance of the world's largest brewer.

In a statement, InBev said it has agreed with the Modelo's management to pay $9.15 per share for the company, a 30 percent premium to the Mexican company's share price just before news of a possible deal came out on June 22.

The combined company would have annual sales of $47 billion, and employ 150,000 workers in 24 countries.

The companies said the agreement was a "natural step," in light of InBev's current stake in Modelo.

"Grupo Modelo has been one of our most important partners for more than 20 years and we are very pleased to evolve our long and successful relationship into this combination," said InBev CEO Carlos Brito. "There is tremendous opportunity from combining two leading brand portfolios and further expanding Grupo Modelo's brands worldwide through AB InBev's extensive global distribution network. "

The deal would join brands such as Corona, Modelo and Pacifico with InBev's Budweiser, Beck and Stella Artois, among others.

Shares in InBev rose 1.6 percent to ?59.93 ($75.38) in Brussels.

InBev said it expects the companies will save $600 million annually by combining operations. Regulators around the world, but most importantly in Mexico and the U.S. must approve the deal. InBev said it expects the deal to close during the first quarter of 2013.

In a related deal, Modelo agreed to sell its 50 percent stake in distributor Crown Imports LLC to its partner, winemaker Constellation Brands Inc. of New York, for $1.85 billion.

Colorado Springs fire ranks as state's most destructive on record

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Reuters) - A fierce Colorado wildfire that has forced the evacuation of some 35,000 people while raging for six days at the edge of the state's second-most populous city has destroyed 346 homes, Mayor Steve Bach said on Thursday, citing preliminary damage reports.

If those figures hold up, the tally of lost homes in and around Colorado Springs would make the so-called Waldo Canyon Fire the state's most destructive on record, surpassing the 257 homes consumed in recent weeks by a much larger blaze north of Denver near Fort Collins.

While no deaths or serious injuries have been reported from the blaze so far, Colorado Springs Police Chief Peter Carey said authorities were seeking the whereabouts of some people he described as "unaccounted for," though he did not give a number.

A police spokeswoman, Carrie McCuffland, said there were no specific reports from citizens of missing people, and that the unaccounted-for list consists of individuals who apparently neglected to register with the city or the American Red Cross as evacuees.

"Every indication is that there are no casualties," McCuffland told Reuters.

Authorities earlier acknowledged the loss of hundreds of homes in Tuesday's firestorm, but the damage toll released by the mayor at an afternoon news conference on Thursday gave the first firm picture of the full extent of the devastation.

President Barack Obama plans to visit Colorado Springs on Friday to meet with firefighters and tour the ravaged zones.

The grim news came as lighter winds helped firefighters battling to contain the inferno that had roared unchecked through residential neighborhoods in the northwestern corner of Colorado Springs and nibbled at the fringe of the U.S. Air Force Academy campus.

The academy welcomed over 1,000 new cadets on Thursday, despite the fire, bringing them to a portion of the facility far from the smoke, base spokesman Harry Lundy said.

For the first time since the blaze erupted on Saturday, a red-flag warning for heightened fire hazards was lifted for the Colorado Springs area.

"We had a pretty good day on the line today. There was minimal fire growth," incident commander Rich Harvey said.

But anguish and frustration ran high among many of the estimated 35,000 residents who remained under evacuation orders.

"You don't have the authority to keep me out of my house," David Dougherty, 45, a retired member of the Armed Forces, shouted out during the news conference. "I understand they're trying to save lives, but some of us don't need to be saved."

Dougherty said he believes his dwelling is still intact and wants to be let back in to the evacuation zone to secure his home and his belongings. Police reported at least one arrest for burglary in an evacuated neighborhood.

Bret Waters, the city's emergency management director, said some evacuees would be allowed to return beginning at 8 p.m. local time Thursday.

CORRALLING THE FLAMES

The Waldo Canyon blaze remained a formidable force, with fire crews managing to carve containment lines around just 10 percent of its perimeter by Thursday afternoon -- a fraction of the sprawling fire zone but still double the previous day's total, officials said.

Searing temperatures and strong, erratic winds in recent days stoked the blaze, which has burned at least 18,500 acres of timber and brush, much of it in the Pike National Forest to the west of the city that lies at the base of the famed Pikes Peak mountaintop.

Firefighters on Wednesday pushed back a spot fire in a vacant corner of the Air Force Academy, but some residential neighborhoods in and around Colorado Springs were harder hit.

"There was nothing left in some areas, burned-out foundations that were smoldering. It looked like a nuclear weapon had been dropped. It's as close to hell as I could imagine," said Bach after touring the Mountain Shadows subdivision, which bore the brunt of the destruction.

Colorado wildfires have killed four people this year in what the governor called "the worst fire season" in state history.

Earlier this month, the High Park Fire west of Fort Collins and north of Denver killed one woman while leaving 257 homes destroyed and more than 87,000 acres blackened. That blaze, ranked briefly as Colorado's most costly in property damage, was listed as 75 percent contained on Thursday.

The cause of the Waldo Canyon Fire remained under investigation, authorities said. FBI's Denver office issued a statement on Thursday saying its agents were "working closely with local, state and federal law enforcement to determine if any of the wild land fires resulted from criminal activity."

The fire menacing Colorado Springs follows a recent string of suspected arson fires in a neighboring county, but officials said they had no indication that the Waldo Canyon blaze was deliberately set.

More than 1,200 personnel, supported by heavy air tankers and helicopters, are assigned to the blaze, Harvey said.

Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, And Social Media ... - Business Insider

Hear from Fortune 500 brands on measuring social media impact at "Social Media ROI," Business Insider's second-annual conference on top tactics for Facebook, YouTube, LinkedIn, Twitter, Instagram, Tumblr, Pinterest and more. September 27, 2012, in New York -- Reserve your ticket now.

Yesterday Orbitz CEO Barney Harford defended his company's targeted pricing -- offering Mac users more expensive hotel options than those offered to PC users -- by using Twitter to send out a clarification.?

As Harford's succinct response shows, social media has grown beyond a conversation tool to help companies manage crises, customer service, marketing, and market analysis.

Yet the question of how social media can contribute to a company's bottom line -- and whether Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram et. al. should even be considered in this light -- remains.

Where's the ROI in social media? Here are some of the latest trends:

  • Farewell, vanity metrics. Hello, engagement.

Firms are now ditching brags about how many followers and fans they have. Instead, they're pointing to specific campaigns run on social platforms and the value those campaigns created for users.

Take Orbitz. In 2009, Orbitz was trying to rack up followers by running ticket give-aways for users who agreed to follow and retweet messages from @Orbitz. There was no value accrued to the user just by participating, unless you count pride in repeating a corporate message from Orbitz's Twitter account. Instead, people were just hoping to win a ticket. A perhaps forgettable experience.

Fast forward to the holiday season in 2011, when the travel company launched "Gift it Forward," asking Facebook users to nominate a friend or loved one who had done a good deed to receive a free vacation. Simply by participating, fans got value: they got to tell someone they care about that this person deserves a nice vacation. Winning was just a bonus. And users were presumably left with a warm, fuzzy feeling about Orbitz.?

So how did that campaign contribute to ROI?

You can hear about successful social media campaigns at Business Insider's Social Media ROI conference, taking place September 27, 2012, in New York City.

Executives from Fortune 500 brands, technology companies, and emerging startups will tackle the question: "Where's the ROI in Social Media?" Register to attend now for the ultra-early bird rate.

Confirmed speakers include:

  • Scott Monty, Global Digital and Multimedia Communications Manager, Ford Motor Company
  • Carmen D'Ascendis, Director of Global Marketing, Jack Daniel's?
  • Dave Gilboa, Co-founder, Warby Parker
  • Kip Levin, EVP E-commerce, TicketMaster
  • And more to be announced! ?

Reserve your seat now for the early discount. Meanwhile, here are additional trends in social media marketing.

  • Farewell, engagement. Hello, ROI.

Engagement is all well and good, goes the thinking. But how do you track and measure its impact on sales?

For some marketers, this isn't the right question. They note that interactive marketing isn't a nice-to-have line item that needs to be justified into a global marketing budget; it's a need-to-have that keeps brands relevant in the always-on digital world. Social media shapes brand identity, helps brands learn from fans, and, in particular, enables a brand to build a relationship with a millennial consumer suspicious of slick, corporate "push" marketing and friendlier to authentic interaction.

But some brands have found a way to quantify their efforts.

TicketMaster rolled out a Facebook integration earlier this year that allows users to share their seats with friends. Each time a ticket purchaser clicks to share on Facebook, that click is worth $6-8 for TicketMaster in eventual ticket sales, their EVP of Ecommerce Kip Levin told Business Insider earlier this year.

That's huge -- as much as clicks from Google's direct-search traffic are worth. And what's more, TicketMaster isn't paying Facebook for the traffic. The integration isn't an advertising campaign; it's just a clever app.

You can hear from Levin directly at Social Media ROI in September.

And in cases where it's tougher for brands to measure revenue from social efforts, an entire ecosystem of technology service providers has arisen to tackle the challenge. The September conference will feature presentations and demos from firms trying to crack the ROI code.

  • Beware the bright, shiny object

This is a mantra brand marketers are repeating these days, warning peers: don't run to a new platform like Pinterest because you read about its incredible growth. Instead, figure out your marketing and communications strategy. Then pick the platform that integrates well with that strategy.

So who's doing this well? Which brands have a savvy strategy that incorporates Instagram, Tumblr, Google+, LinkedIn, and the many other social media available?

Find out at Social Media ROI in September. Here's who should attend:

  • Marketers who want to put metrics behind their Twitter, Facebook and other social efforts
  • Publishers interested in learning how to maximize their social efforts
  • Consultants and agencies who want to offer their clients a clear ROI picture
  • Investors in social-media analytics companies who need to stay abreast of market trends and needs

Meanwhile, you can follow @BI_Events on Twitter for further discounts and updates. See you in September.

Hulu lands major HBO deal? in Japan

Hulu just announced a major content partnership with HBO for its Japanese subscription service that will make episodes of shows like Entourage, Sex and the City and The Sopranos available to Japanese audiences. Shows will be available on Hulu Japan for a limited time, and the release will be staggered: Viewers will be able to watch the first season of Sex and the City starting in July and through September, with episodes of the second season becoming available in August and the third season popping up on the service in September.

Hulu?s SVP of International Johannes Larcher announced the deal on the company?s blog, where he also said that the content offered by Hulu Japan has grown by 300 percent since its launch less than a year ago. From his blog post:

?The amount of content available to subscribers overall has increased by more than 300% since the service launched in September 2011. There are now more than 800 films and nearly 6,900 TV show episodes from 24 content providers. And we have continued to heavily invest in creating original subtitles for TV shows that have never before been available in Japan, including new series like ?Sons of Anarchy?, ?The Office? and ?It?s Always Sunny In Philadelphia.?

Hulu?s Japanese service is subscription-only, and the company lowered its price earlier this year to increase demand. Larcher said that Hulu now has 19 people working in Japan.

U.S. users of Hulu shouldn?t hold their breath for HBO content coming to the service any time soon. The shows added to the Japanese catalog are all part of the DVD window, and HBO has been successfully established its own online service HBO Go in the U.S. ? and access to that offering is limited to cable TV subscribers who also pay for HBO access as part of their cable bill.

Merkel rebuffs pleas for debt action on summit eve

BERLIN/MADRID (Reuters) - On the eve of an EU summit that could determine the future of the euro zone, German Chancellor Angela Merkel brushed aside increasingly shrill calls from Spain and Italy on Wednesday for emergency action to lower their soaring borrowing costs.

European Union leaders go into the two-day meeting on Thursday afternoon (1300 GMT) more openly divided than at any time since a still-widening debt crisis erupted in early 2010 after Greece had revealed its budget deficit and debt were far higher than reported.

Addressing parliament in Berlin, Merkel accused top EU officials of putting the cart before the horse by proposing common euro zone debt before EU controls are in place on national budgets and economic policies.

"I fear that at the summit we will talk too much about all these ideas for joint liability and too little about improved controls and structural measures," she said, renewing her mantra that even Europe's strongest economy must not be overburdened. Merkel left the door ajar to eventual joint debt issuance but offered no immediate moves to ease the crisis. By contrast, EU Economic and Monetary Affairs Commissioner Olli Rehn said European leaders would work at the summit on short-term steps to relieve market pressure on countries at risk.

"It is essential that (short-term policy measures) are decided by the European Council," Rehn told reporters.

The German leader insisted governments must commit to giving EU institutions the power to override their budgets and make them change policy before there could be any shared liability for Europe's debt.

"Joint liability can only happen when sufficient controls are in place," she said. The remarks appeared to be a less definitive rejection of common euro zone bonds than she made behind closed doors on Tuesday, when she told lawmakers she did not expect to see total shared debt liability in her lifetime.

Rome and Madrid have seen their borrowing costs spiral to a level which Spain at least could not afford for long as it tries to recapitalize banks ravaged by a property market collapse and cut a towering budget deficit.

Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy said he would ask other EU leaders to allow the bloc's bailout funds or the European Central Bank to stabilize financial markets.

Rajoy warned that Spain would not be able to finance itself indefinitely with 10-year bond yields near seven percent. "The most urgent issue is the one of financing. We can't keep funding ourselves for a long time at the prices we're currently funding ourselves," he told parliament.

DIVISIONS ON DISPLAY

EU divisions have been more openly displayed since Socialist Francois Hollande ousted Nicolas Sarkozy as French president, challenging Berlin to move away from austerity, promote economic growth and mutualise Europe's debts.

Rome and Madrid, now in the financial markets' firing line, have muscled into the traditional Franco-German axis.

Leaders of the four countries held an unusually discordant news conference in Rome on Friday and Merkel flew to Paris on Wednesday to try to repair the damage at a working dinner with Hollande. The four countries' finance ministers met late on Tuesday in Paris to try to narrow differences.

Merkel beamed at the media as Hollande greeted her warmly for talks that officials said would focus on bringing their long-term visions for European integration into line, as well as specific steps to ease short-term pressure on markets.

"I say we need more Europe and I think we are in agreement there," Merkel said. "We need a Europe that functions effectively, markets are looking for this, and a Europe where countries help each other."

Hollande - who put on a full guard of honor for Merkel after raising eyebrows in mid-June by quietly hosting German opposition leaders at the presidential palace - said they both wanted to deepen monetary union and bolster solidarity.

A conference call of all 17 euro zone finance ministers on Wednesday also focused on ideas to calm markets, such as altering the preferred creditor status of the bloc's future bailout fund, the European Stability Mechanism (ESM).

Berlin, which originally insisted that ESM loans must be senior to private bondholders to protect taxpayers from losses in any debt restructuring, hinted at flexibility on the rule, which has put investors off buying Spanish bonds.

A Eurogroup statement said the ministers welcomed Spain's request for assistance and expected it would need 51 billion-62 billion euros plus an additional "safety margin".

Ministers also welcomed an application made by Cyprus this week for help and said Nicosia would have to commit to budget cuts and structural economic reforms, as well as steps to strengthen its bloated financial sector.

The request made Cyprus the fifth euro state to seek aid from EU rescue funds, after Greece, Ireland, Portugal and Spain.

In Rome, Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti said on Tuesday he would not simply rubber stamp conclusions at the EU summit and was ready to go on negotiating into Sunday evening if necessary to agree on measures to calm markets.

With Hollande's support, Monti is pushing for the euro zone's rescue funds, backed by the ECB, to be used to bring down Spanish and Italian borrowing costs. Rajoy would settle for that or the ECB doing the same job by reviving its bond-buying program.

The proposal has run into stiff opposition from Germany, the bloc's effective paymaster, and has been rejected by Jens Weidmann, the powerful head of the German central bank.

Stock markets perked up last week on hopes that the 20th EU summit since the start of the crisis would come up with dramatic measures. Investors have since thought better of that view.

One senior euro zone source said there would be no short-term decisions for market consumption at the summit - no direct recapitalization of banks by the ESM, and no bond buying.

The euro fell on Wednesday, with many investors out of the markets before the Brussels meeting.

"People are waiting for the inevitable - which is that policymakers will probably fail to do what is necessary," said Neil Mellor, currency analyst at Bank of New York Mellon.

ECB chief economist Peter Praet gave markets some cheer by telling Financial Times Deutschland there was no doctrine that euro zone interest rates could not fall below the record low of 1 percent. It was the latest in a series of hints that the ECB may lower rates at its next meeting on July 5.

A Reuters poll showed 48 out of 71 economists expect the bank to cut rates next week. Respondents expect some progress towards a euro zone banking union at this week's summit but less advance on fiscal union.

BORROWING COSTS

Merkel finds herself in a dwindling minority in the EU, backed only by the Netherlands and Finland, but she holds the euro zone's purse strings and therefore nearly all the cards.

Italy and Spain argue that they are making wrenching sacrifices to cut their debt mountains and need some support from their currency area peers to keep the markets at bay.

Monti won a fourth and final confidence vote on Wednesday to accelerate passage of a watered-down labor reform criticized by both trade unions and the business establishment, strengthening his hand before the EU summit.

Spain, which has been offered loans of up to 100 billion euros to recapitalize its banks but is determined not to ask for a sovereign bailout, is considering raising consumer, energy and property taxes.

Underlining the parlous state of Spanish finances, figures showed the central government's deficit had already reached 3.41 percent of annual gross domestic product in only the first five months of the year, close to its target for the whole year of 3.5 percent.

Spain's central bank said it expected recession to deepen in the second quarter.

The Brussels summit is expected to agree on a growth package pushed by France worth around 130 billion euros ($162 billion) in infrastructure project bonds, reallocated regional aid funds and European Investment Bank loans.

Sony Bravia KDL-55HX850

HDTVs in Sony's HX850 series offer lots of features, accurate colors, and a crystal clear picture, all in a stylish, energy- efficient frame. Despite their relatively low peak white output this edge-mounted LED line delivers very good image quality in both 2D and 3D, and the picture looks good from all angles. We tested the KDL-55HX850 ($2,599.99 direct), the 54.6-inch version of the screen. It?s on the high side for an edge-lit model, however, and you?ll have to cough up even more money for 3D glasses.

Design
Edge-to-edge durable Gorilla glass topped off with a slice of silver trim around the edge gives the HX850 a sleek, streamlined look, as does the slim (1.4-inch) cabinet. The arched shiny black plastic stand isn't as flashy as the metal stands used on the Samsung UN46ES6500F ($1,729.99, 3 stars) and LG 55LM9600 ($3,599.99, 2.5 stars), but it does a good job of supporting the 47-pound cabinet and lets you easily swivel the panel to the left and right. Power, Volume, Channel Up/Down, Input Up/Down, and Home (Menu) buttons are located at the rear of the cabinet on the lower right side.

Also at the rear of the cabinet are the HX850?s numerous I/O connections. Two HDMI ports, a pair of USB ports, an RGB (PC) video input, and 3.5mm PC audio in and out jacks all face left for easy access, while the composite and component AV jacks and a connector for an optional external speaker stand are flush-mounted outward. Down-facing ports include a cable/antenna jack, an Ethernet port, an optical audio output, and two additional HDMI ports. These connections can be hard to get to if the TV is hung on a wall.

At 7.9 inches, the remote is light and comfortable to hold. Due to the remote's compact size, buttons are on the small side, and none are illuminated. In addition to the standard buttons there?s a SEN key that takes you right to the Sony Entertainment Network menu. There?s also a Scene button used for choosing picture modes, an Options button for adjusting settings, and dedicated Netflix and Internet Apps buttons. Oddly, the remote lacks a dedicated 3D button; you need to go through the menu system to find adjustments if 3D content doesn't automatically display the way you want.

You get a variety of basic and advanced picture settings. Scene selections include Auto (automatically selects the scene mode that is best suited to the content being displayed), Auto 24p Sync (selects Cinema mode for 24Hz signals), General, Cinema (two options), Sports, Animation, Photo, Game, and Graphics (for displaying tables and charts). For most lighting environments Cinema 2 is ideal, but Cinema 1 significantly lowers the backlight level for very dark rooms.

Brightness, Picture (Contrast), Color, Hue, Sharpness, and Noise Reduction are part of the basic menu, as are CineMotion (for more natural looking film-based content), MotionFlow (for smoother moving images), and color temperature settings. The advanced menu offers a black corrector, a contrast enhancer, gamma settings, local dimming control, six white balance settings, and a whiteness enhancer.

The HX850 offers both wired and wireless internet connectivity and comes with a generous selection of Web services. The Sony Entertainment Network, which requires a subscription, offers Music Unlimited and Video Unlimited channels with an extensive catalog of current music and movies titles to choose from. In addition to plenty of Yahoo apps, you get more than 50 content channels that include sports, art, and music services, plus Amazon Instant Video, Hulu Plus, Netflix, You Tube, Picasa, Slacker Radio, Twitter, and Facebook. There's a Skype app too, but you?ll have to get Sony's optional $149 webcam to use it.

Performance
We measure luminance levels and color accuracy using images from the DisplayMate HDTV diagnostic tests, a Konica-Minolta CS-200 Chroma Meter, and SpectraCals? CalMAN software. ?The KDL-55HX850 turned in very accurate colors, as shown in the CIE luminance chart below. Reds and greens were in line, blues were only slightly off, but well within an acceptable range, as they had no effect on color quality and did not cause tinting in the grayscale or in skin tones.

After a basic darkroom calibration in which we disable all processing and dynamic picture features, the HX850 produced an unimpressive peak brightness reading of 94.82 cd/m2 and a decent black level reading of 0.04 cd/m2. The resulting contrast ratio of 2,370:1 isn?t terrible, but it doesn?t come close to the 22,819:1 we got from the Editors' Choice Sony BR-55HX929 ($2,899.99, 4.5 stars), which delivered a significantly brighter picture and much darker blacks.

Despite the low contrast ratio, the HX850?s X-Reality Pro processing technology delivered a sharp, detailed picture when set to Cinema mode (which takes advantage of the processing engine to optimize color and contrast). The BBC?s Planet Earth on Blu-ray looked fantastic; shadow detail in the opening credits (which shows the Earth from outer space) was quite good, and image quality was clean and sharp. What?s more, the picture maintained its color fidelity when viewed from an extreme side angle.?

The HX850 series uses active 3D technology, and requires battery-powered active shutter glasses to work. The set doesn?t come with glasses, but you can buy them direct from Sony for $49.99 a pair. I watched several 3D demonstration videos on Blu-ray, and the picture showed satisfying depth. Snowboarders in the Winter X Games stood out on the slopes, and spraying snow popped right out of the screen. I observed some crosstalk, especially on edges of highly contrasting objects, but it wasn?t obtrusive.

The HX850 used only 47 watts of power during my testing without any energy-saving features enabled, which is very good for a 54.6-inch LED backlit panel. By way of comparison, the 55-inch LG 55LM6700 ($2,299, 4 stars) used 67 watts, and the Vizio M3D550KD ($1,429.99, 4 stars) used 135 watts. The set earns our GreenTech stamp of approval for excellent energy efficiency.

Conclusion
At $2,600, Sony?s KDL-55HX850 is a bit pricey, especially when compared with our Editors? Choice for Budget HDTVs, the $1,430 Vizio M3D550KD. Still, it is $900 less expensive than the same-size LG?s 55LM9600, and outperforms that set in every way, except on contrast ratio.? Accurate colors and sharp image detail help atone for the HX850?s less-than-stellar contrast ratio, and its sleek cabinet and seamless glass covering will dress up any room. Sony should have thrown in a couple of sets of 3D glasses, though. As good as it is, the HX850 can?t stand toe-to-toe with its higher- performing (and slightly more expensive) sibling, the Sony XBR-55HX929.

ICS now officially available for AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II

While it's true a few lucky AT&T Galaxy S II owners were able to get their hands on the official upgrade to Android 4.0 just a matter of days ago, the company wasn't ready to push it out to the masses quite just yet. The initial tests must've gone as well as hoped, however, because AT&T will be ready to make ICS publicly available tomorrow to anyone willing to go through Kies to grab it. Indeed, the one drawback to this wonderful news is the fact that ICS doesn't just come to you... you need to go to it. As in, no over-the-air capabilities. The silver lining to that, though, is that this may actually work out better for anyone that feels better off sticking with the tried-and-true Gingerbread TouchWiz experience. On a sidenote, AT&T also reaffirmed its commitment to bringing the next version of Android to more devices this summer, but refused to specify which ones we can look forward to. Head below (or check out the source link) to learn how to grab the update.

Islamist Morsi named Egypt's president

CAIRO (AP) ? Islamist Mohammed Morsi was declared the winner Sunday in Egypt's first free presidential election in history, closing the tumultuous first phase of a democratic transition and opening a new struggle with the still-dominant military rulers who recently stripped the presidency of most of its powers.

In Tahrir Square, the birthplace of the uprising that ousted autocratic President Hosni Mubarak, joyous Morsi supporters wept and kneeled on the ground in prayer as soon as they heard the outcome announced live television. They danced, set off fireworks and released doves in the air with Morsi's picture attached in celebrations not seen in the square since Mubarak was forced out on Feb. 11, 2011.

Many are looking now to see whether Morsi will try to take on the military and wrestle back the powers they took from his office just one week ago. Thousands vowed to remain in Tahrir to demand that the ruling generals reverse their decision.

"I pledge to be a president who serves his people and works for them," Morsi said on his official web page. "I will not betray God in defending your rights and the rights of this nation." He was scheduled to address the nation Sunday night in his first speech after being declared president.

The White House congratulated Morsi and urged him to advance national unity as he forms a new government. White House press secretary Jay Carney said Morsi's victory is a milestone in Egypt's transition to democracy after decades of authoritarian rule under Mubarak. The Obama administration had expressed no public preference in the presidential race.

Left on the sidelines of the political drama are the liberal and secular youth groups that drove the uprising against Mubarak, left to wonder whether Egypt has taken a step towards becoming an Islamist state. Some grudgingly supported Morsi in the face of Ahmed Shafiq, who was Mubarak's last prime minister, while others boycotted the vote.

Morsi will now have to reassure them that he represents the whole country, not just Islamists, and will face enormous challenges after security and the economy badly deteriorated in the transition period.

Pro-democracy leader Mohammed ElBaradei urged unity after the results were announced.

"It is time we work all as Egyptians as part of a national consensus to build Egypt that is based on freedom and social justice," he wrote on his Twitter account.

The elections left the nation deeply polarized with one side backing Shafiq, who promised to provide stability and prevent Egypt from becoming a theocracy. Because of his military career, many saw him as the military's preferred candidate.

In the other camp are those eager for democratic change and backers of Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood who were persecuted, jailed and banned under Mubarak but now find themselves one of the two most powerful groups in Egypt.

The other power center is the ruling military council that took power after the uprising and is headed by Mubarak's defense minister of 20 years.

Just one week ago, at the moment polls were closing in the presidential runoff, the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) issued constitutional amendments that stripped the president's office of most of its major powers. The ruling generals made themselves the final arbiters over the most pressing issues still complicating the transition? such as writing the constitution, legislating, passing the state budget? and granted military police broad powers to detain civilians.

"I am happy the Brotherhood won because now the revolution will continue on the street against both of them, the Brotherhood and the SCAF," said Lobna Darwish, an activist who has boycotted the elections.

Also, a few days before that constitutional declaration, a court dissolved the freely elected parliament, which is dominated by the Muslim Brotherhood, leaving the military now in charge of legislating.

Brotherhood members and experts said the results were used a bargaining chip between the generals and the Brotherhood over the parameters of what appears to be a new power-sharing agreement. The country's new constitution is not written and the authorities of the president are not clear.

This is the first time modern Egypt will be headed by an Islamist and by a freely elected civilian. The country's last four presidents over the past six decades have all came from the ranks of the military.

"Congratulations because this means the end of the Mubarak state," said Shady el-Ghazali Harb, a prominent activist who was among the leaders of the protests in January and February last year.

The results of the elections were delayed for four days amid accusations of manipulation and foul play by both sides, raising political tensions in Egypt to a fever pitch.

The delay plunged the country into nerve-wrecking anticipation and pushed tensions to a fever pitch. Parallel mass rallies by Shafiq and Morsi supporters were held in different parts of Cairo and cut-throat media attacks by supporters of both swarmed TV shows. In the hours before the announcement of the winner, the fear of new violence was palpable.

Heavy security was deployed around the country, especially outside state institutions, in anticipation of possible violence. Workers were sent home early from jobs, jewelry stores closed for fear of looting and many were stocking up on food and forming long lines at cash machines in case new troubles began.

Morsi, the 60-year old U.S.-trained engineer, narrowly defeated Shafiq with 51.7 percent of the vote versus 48.3, by a margin of only 800,000 votes, the election commission said. Turnout was 51 percent.

Farouk Sultan, the head of the commission, described the elections as "an important phase in the end of building our nascent democratic experience."

Sultan went to pains to explain the more than 400 complaints presented by the two candidates challenging counting procedures and alleging attempts of rigging. It appeared to be an attempt to discredit claims that the election commission was biased in favor of Shafiq, the candidate perceived as backed by the military rulers.

The country is deeply divided between supporters of the Brotherhood, liberals and leftists who also decided to back them as a way to stand up to the military, and other secular forces that fear the domination of the Brotherhood, and grew critical of it in the past year. The small margin of victory for Morsi also sets him for a strong opposition from supporters of Shafiq, viewed as a representative of the old regime.

Naguib Sawiris, a Coptic Christian business tycoon who joined a liberal bloc in voicing opposition to the Muslim Brotherhood a day before the results were announced, said he expects the new president to send a reassuring message to Egypt's Christian minority who represent around 10 percent of the population of 85 million.

"There are fears of imposing an Islamic state ... where Christians don't have same rights," Sawiris told the private TV station CBC. Morsi "is required to prove the opposite. ... We don't want speeches or promises but in the coming period, it is about taking action. ... He was not our choice but we are accepting it is a democratic choice."

Hamdeen Sabahi, a leftist presidential candidate who came in a surprising third place in the first round of elections, asked Morsi to live up to his pledges to form a national coalition government and appoint presidential aides from different groups "that express the largest national consensus."

Khaled Abdel-Hamid, a leading leftist politician, said Morsi must fight to get his powers back or he will lose any popular support he may have garnered.

"If he fights to get his power back, we will support him. But if he doesn't fight back, then he is settling for siding with the military," he said.

Sea rise faster on East Coast than rest of globe

WASHINGTON (AP) ? From Cape Hatteras, N.C., to just north of Boston, sea levels are rising much faster than they are around the globe, putting one of the world's most costly coasts in danger of flooding, government researchers report.

U.S. Geological Survey scientists call the 600-mile swath a "hot spot" for climbing sea levels caused by global warming. Along the region, the Atlantic Ocean is rising at an annual rate three times to four times faster than the global average since 1990, according to the study published Sunday in the journal Nature Climate Change.

It's not just a faster rate, but at a faster pace, like a car on a highway "jamming on the accelerator," said the study's lead author, Asbury Sallenger Jr., an oceanographer at the agency. He looked at sea levels starting in 1950, and noticed a change beginning in 1990.

Since then, sea levels have gone up globally about 2 inches. But in Norfolk, Va., where officials are scrambling to fight more frequent flooding, sea level has jumped a total of 4.8 inches, the research showed. For Philadelphia, levels went up 3.7 inches, and in New York City, it was 2.8 inches.

Climate change pushes up sea levels by melting ice sheets in Greenland and west Antarctica, and because warmer water expands.

Computer models long have projected higher levels along parts of the East Coast because of changes in ocean currents from global warming, but this is the first study to show that's already happened.

By 2100, scientists and computer models estimate that sea levels globally could rise as much as 3.3 feet. The accelerated rate along the East Coast could add about 8 inches to 11 inches more, Sallenger said.

"Where that kind of thing becomes important is during a storm," Sallenger said. That's when it can damage buildings and erode coastlines.

On the West Coast, a National Research Council report released Friday projects an average 3-foot rise in sea level in California by the year 2100, and 2 feet in Oregon and Washington. The land mass north of the San Andreas Fault is expected to rise, offsetting the rising sea level in those two states.

The USGS study suggests the Northeast would get hit harder because of ocean currents. When the Gulf Stream and its northern extension slow down, the slope of the seas changes to balance against the slowing current. That slope then pushes up sea levels in the Northeast. It is like a see-saw effect, Sallenger theorizes.

Scientists believe that with global warming, the Gulf Stream and other ocean currents are slowing and will slow further, Sallenger said.

Jeff Williams, a retired USGS expert who wasn't part of the study, and Stefan Rahmstorf, a professor of ocean physics at the Potsdam Institute in Germany, said the study does a good job of making the case for sea level rise acceleration.

Margaret Davidson, director of the Coastal Services Center for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in Charleston, S.C., said the implications of the new research are "huge when you think about it. Somewhere between Maryland and Massachusetts, you've got some bodaciously expensive property at risk."

Sea level projections matter in coastal states because flood maps based on those predictions can result in restrictions on property development and affect flood insurance rates.

Those estimates became an issue in North Carolina recently when the Legislature proposed using historic figures to calculate future sea levels, rejecting higher rates from a state panel of experts. The USGS study suggests an even higher level than the panel's estimate for 2100.

The North Carolina proposal used data from University of Florida professor Robert Dean, who had found no regional differences in sea level rise. Dean said he can't argue with the results from Sallenger's study showing accelerating sea level rise in the region, but he said it's more likely to be from natural cycles. Sallenger said there is no evidence to support that claim.

Apple Store workers get big pay bumps

After months of increasingly loud and public complaints from Apple (AAPL) Store employees about not being rewarded enough for their labor, the Cupertino tech giant is raising hourly pay for workers by as much as 25 percent, according to news reports and some employees.

"This is long overdue,'' said Cory Moll, a specialist in Apple's downtown San Francisco store who led efforts to create the Apple Retail Workers Union. "For many of us who work in the stores, this shows us that Apple is realizing the value we provide to the company. They're starting to recognize that we need to be able to live in the cities we work in and to afford Apple's products. So these raises were definitely nice to get.''

It was unclear Thursday exactly how many of the equivalent of 36,000 full-time staffers Apple employs at its more than 350 retail stores around the globe are getting the raises. Apple would not comment. But according to three Apple employees in various regions across the U.S. who spoke with The Wall Street Journal, the raises are based on performance and will begin appearing in paychecks around the middle of July.

Moll, who has worked in Apple stores four and a half years, said his current wage of $14.49 an hour will rise by $2.82 an hour beginning June 30. In addition to that nearly 20-percent

raise, Moll said he and other staffers will be eligible for big discounts on Apple products, including $500 off a new Mac or $250 off a new iPad. Moll, 30, said those new discounts went into effect this week.

"And that's on top of the 25-percent discount we already get off a Mac or iPad,'' he said.

Moll said that while most store employees typically get small raises in the fall during their annual reviews, this week's raises are dramatically higher than what most people see each year. He added that it's unclear whether workers will see similarly high raises in the future.

The pay raises, first reported by the Business Insider blog, come two months after Apple's newly appointed retail chief, John Browett, joined the company. Mr. Browett came to Apple from Dixons Retail PLC, a large chain of electronics stores in the U.K.

Soon after joining the company, Mr. Browett sent a video message to employees saying that he would accelerate employees performance review periods by three months from their originally scheduled period in September, which Moll confirms has now happened.

The overwhelming staff complaint during an internal review was wage levels, one employee told the Journal. Higher-level retail staff, such as its "Genius" tech support teams and "Creative" educational teams, were among the most frustrated, this person said.

Apple Store workers are typically paid about $9 to $15 an hour at the sales level, and up to about $30 an hour at its "Genius" tech support teams.

Moll said he thinks fledgling efforts by Apple Store employees to unionize, or to at least create an ongoing conversation through their workers' group about working conditions and wages, may have helped prompt Apple to award this week's wage increases. He said he believes that employees across the country are receiving similar pay boosts based on emails and twitter traffic he has seen from his colleagues.

"Normally in the past, our raises were only 2-to-5 percent,'' Moll said. "I can't help but think that our efforts have played a role in this larger increase. Plus, Tim Cook is now CEO and he's doing things differently than Steve Jobs did, and John Browett is definitely taking a new approach here as well.

"We want to see more from Apple,'' said Moll. "But this is a good step forward.''

SEO Hosting question by vigeee: Do server mirroring affect ranking in search engines?
We have an e-commerce site that is yet to be popularized online. We have planned to overcome the problems of server downtime by hosting the website in two different servers one is primary and the second one is reserved. By default, the bot fetches data from the primary server. In case of downtime issues in the primary server, the bot will fetch data from the secondary server. Will this technology affect SEO? Do search engines index both the ip address of the servers and think if it is duplicate?
Kindly tell us what is the benefits and drawback in implementing this technique.

The PocketGamer.biz week that was: Microsoft's Surface wows with Windows, Apple expands the App Store, and Nintendo unveils brand new (same old) handheld

The past 7 days in bite-sized portions

Though much rumoured in the days leading up to its unveiling, you shouldn't underestimate the surprise that greeted Microsoft's Surface when it was revealed to the world.

Windows 8 tablets were already on the cards, but one made by Microsoft itself ? whether a genuine attempt to take on iPad, or as is more likely, a message to manufacturers as to just what the OS is capable of ? seemed unlikely.

The?Redmond giant wasn't the only company to announce new hardware this week, however.

Nintendo also lifted the lid on the 3DS XL. In case you missed it, it's a 3DS, but bigger, and ? for reasons unknown - doesn't come equipped with a second circle pad. An odd choice, yes, but even more bizarre is the fact that European units will ship without an AC adaptor.

Such nonsense is nothing new, however.

The GBA's screen was a murky black hole that trapped all light. The original DS was a little dim too, while also constituting a bulky assault on design aesthetics. The 3DS shipped with a lunatic price-tag and lacked battery stamina.

These are the kind of shenanigans fans have long put up with in order to play Nintendo software on the go. Before we get too frustrated by that fact, however, let's move on to our bite-sized overview of the last seven days' worth of news.

  • Facebook is working on a location-based mobile advertising product as the company looks for ways to monetise its mobile users.
  • The Social Network is also allowing publishers to charge players using local currency ??rather than Facebook credits?? and allowing monthly subscriptions for the first time.
  • A new partnership with ad network InMobi allows Marmalade's dev community to easily implement in-app advertising.
  • Research from Arkadium shows that RPG and strategy game fans are among the biggest spenders in Facebook games, along with online shoppers and social butterflies.
Microsoft's new line-up
  • Microsoft unveils Surface ? a 10.6 inch Windows 8 tablet available in ARM and Intel variants...
  • ...But?the giant?didn't inform its OEM partners of its plans to launch a rival product, and they weren't thrilled to find out about it.
  • Still, PocketGamer.biz deputy editor Keith Andrew argues that having a flagship Windows 8 device will give other manufacturers a standard to measure up against. A good thing for Windows 8 on tablets.
  • Microsoft also unveiled Windows Phone 8 this week, explaining that the mobile OS shares a 'core' with Windows 8, and will support C/C++ development.
  • But current Windows Phone users won't be able to upgrade to Windows Phone 8 ? a break in the ecosystem which will be painful but necessary, according to Keith Andrew.

The Endocrine Society

In testosterone-deficient men, major weight loss was an added benefit of testosterone replacement therapy for most of the patients who participated in a new study. The results will be presented Saturday at The Endocrine Society's 94th Annual Meeting in Houston.

"The substantial weight loss found in our studyan average of 36 poundswas a surprise," said the study's lead author, Farid Saad, PhD, of Berlin-headquartered Bayer Pharma.

Although prior studies using testosterone therapy in testosterone-deficient men consistently show changes in body composition, such as increased lean mass and decreased fat mass, Saad said the net effect on weight seemed unchanged in those studies. However, Saad said their study, which took place in Germany, had a longer follow-up by at least two years and used long-acting injections of testosterone.

The investigators restored testosterone to normal levels in 255 testosterone-deficient ("hypogonadal") men, whose average age was nearly 61 (range, 38 to 83 years). Treatment lasted for up to five years, with injections given at day 1, after 6 weeks and then every 12 weeks after that. Patients did not follow a controlled diet or standard exercise program but received advice to improve their lifestyle habits.

On average, the men weighed 236 pounds before beginning testosterone treatment and 200 pounds after treatment (106.2 versus 90 kilograms), the authors reported. Weight loss was reportedly continuous, with an average reduction in body weight ranging from about 4 percent after one year of treatment to more than 13 percent after five years.

In addition, men lost an average of nearly 3.5 inches (8.8 centimeters) around their waist.

"These results are encouraging because studies show that weight loss drugs and lifestyle interventions have been largely unsuccessful, especially long term," Saad said.

Testosterone deficiency becomes more common with age. Saad said many middle-aged men with testosterone deficiency are obese, explaining that there is "a vicious circle" in obesity and low testosterone.

"Obesity is associated with reduced testosterone, and low testosterone induces weight gain," Saad wrote in the study abstract.

Testosterone replacement is the standard treatment for most men with symptomatic testosterone deficiency, according to The Endocrine Society guidelines.

In the study by Saad and colleagues, treatment used a slow-release, injectable form of the male hormone (testosterone undecanoate) that is not yet available in the United States. It is marketed in Europe, Latin America, Australia and parts of Asia and Africa.
